USAirways Florida Operations Shrinking Fast..

Thu Apr 04, 2002 8:33 am

Don't I know it! I'm a customer service agent, or should I say, WAS, at PBI. I was furloughed this week, after 18 years of service! SAD! Sad PBI is going down to 10 mainline, 3 Express, on the April 8th schedule. Last year at this time, PBI had 23 mainline/MetroJet departures. It ain't over yet, either. Our sister station in FLL, is reducing to 16 flights in June, down from a peak of 36 flights last year, from 24, currently. And this is the clincher, TPA, once one of USAirways' largest stations, is being reduced to just 18 mainline departures in June. MCO service will also be dramatically curtailed. With all those airplanes being parked and none to replace them, since most of the Airbus deliveries have been deferred, with the exception of the remaining A321 orders, 9 airplanes total, I guess the inevitable has to happen. Total active fleet, 329 airplanes, as of April 1st. Less planes, less employees. Who'd ever think that I'd have to be put in this position, at this point in my career? Am I bitter? That answer is a resounding, YES!!

sorry to hear you were furloughed. i dont know usairways continues to show rapid signs of bankruptcy. i wonder who will step in to pick up the load that usairways dropped. i know there is a great demand on the phl-florida routes and i am sure the same can go for the other hubs.

I have also noticed the downturn of US Airways operations shrinking from New England to Florida. Last year at this time, Boston was able to support an American 767-200, 7 Delta Express 737-200s, and I believe 5-7 US Airways 737-200s (opb MetroJet). Now, we are down to 2x American 737-800 and 7x Delta Express 737-200. At MHT and BDL, I know there was service to MCO on the weekends, and apparently Southwest has picked up the slack. Sorry to hear about your furlough.

I flew USAirways to and from Tampa last weekend. I have to admit, there did seem to be a bit of empty gate space... Best of luck to you, John.

John,

Sorry to hear about your furlough. I know here in Dayton US has trashed most of their operations as well.(which is sad because it used to be a Piedmont hub) Post 9/11 US shutdown it's RES center here in DAY as well. Hope the future for you is brighter than this.

Regards

Yea, I have a nice severance package, thankfully, so if there CAN be anything positive from this, this will carry me over, for awhile.

John: try to get hired at AirTran. They are hiring a bunch of people right now, and I've heard that they are short-staffed in a couple Florida stations. They actually talk to the employee unions to work things out. Just look at what they did after 9/11 compared to AA, US, UA, etc.

So sorry to hear about your lay-off. I have noticed how many changes have been going on at US Airways and perticularly PIT. by the year end I bet the whole A concourse will be US Airways Express.  Sad less and less jets. It`s so sad to see a great airline like US Airways go down.  Sad

Definetly check out WN or even the Airport Authorities which run PBI or FLL, with your experience you stand an excellent chance in their CSR departments..

Best of luck.

Us Airways isn't just shrinking in Florida, it's shrinking everywhere! Ever since 9-11 and the closing of Metrojet, they have been going down the toilet. Up here in New England, they are slowing down operations at BOS, PVD, MHT ect..

John- Good luck finding a new airline job. I suggest giving WN a try.

I'm so sorry that you lost your job. I can't imagine MCO hardly having US Airways aircraft, eventhough not the biggest airline at MCO but they are still a big player. Do you have any more info on the cutbacks at Orlando.

Hartford- Florida is a huge market. Last year with Metro jet it was this.

BDL-MCO Metro jet 3X dailt
BDL-MCO Delta 5X daily
BDL-MCO Southwest 1X daily

BDL-FLL Metro jet 1X daily
BDL-FLL Delta 3X daily

BDL-PBI Metro jet 1X daily
BDL-PBI Delta 3X daily

BDL-TPA Metro 2X daily
BDL-TPA Delta 1X daily

Now....

BDL-MCO 4X delta, 2X Southwest

BDL-FLL 3X delta

BDL-PBI 3x delta

BDL-TPA 2x delta, 1X southwest

The loss of Metro jet hasnt been picked up by Delta or Southwest that much.

that is because delta express still hasnt come back to full operation. once they start pulling back their 732's from the temporary desert storage, i am sure they will add flts into bdl.
i was looking at usairways schedules and i noticed that usairways is cutting a good number of florida flts from phl, it looked like it was around 5 to 10 flts.

Afitch7881, don't forget AA's popular daily MIA-BDL service. With AA's upcoming expansion at MIA to 330 daily flights in the next 4 years, thrice-daily MIA-BDL service would not surprise me (3x daily is the norm for AA @ MIA).

BDL-MIA wouldnt suprise me either to twice daily. 3 time daily in summer wouldnt be bad either with a decent amount of caribean traffic from BDL.

Back a few years ago BDL-MIA use to be 3 times daily, and actually was a A300 on some flight too.

They seemed pretty busy to me.

All my planes were pretty full.

A great flight.

Yeah I just got off a LGA-PIT-CDG and a CDG-PHL and dude, all those flights were jam packed.

Anyway, should I be using up my Divident Miles??

PS: John, look for jobs with JetBlue or Airtran, big growth!

I wouldnt go that far.

Look at TWA.

USAirways is like any other airline. Sometimes they have great years and other times it is difficult.

There are several airlines including CONTINENTAL that have rebounded and become better than ever.

I think USAirways weakness is its EAST COAST base.
Seems to be a curse. But its not USAirways fault.

Their planes are clean and nice.

TNNH: I'm guessing that you took those flights over the weekend. Most flights were packed then. It was a very busy travel day due to 2 types of spring breaks out. The schools who have it the last week of March, and the schools who have it the week before Easter.

Sorry to hear about your layoff, John. I'd echo the advice above; look to one of the airlines expanding in Florida, or with the airport. Air travel to Florida will remain strong, but it will be on other airlines.

Florida just doesn't make sense for US Airways anymore. Even high-fare purgatories like ROC and SYR have lots of low-fare service to Florida nowadays. With its 14-cent CSM's, US Airways can't compete in a market where airlines with 7-cent and 7.5-cent CSM's are becoming dominant.

Thank you all for your advice and support, it's truly appreciated. Also, If I were to consider a job with AirTran or Southwest, starting from the bottom would NOT be an option for me. With all my experience and Ground Security qualifications, I'm certainly worth more and deserve better than $8.00 hr! That would be an insult.

That's a disadvantage of the heavy unionization of the airline industry. Everything is about seniority. That's a 1930's-era model that assumes one works for the same employer all one's life. In today's economy, that old assumption, sadly, is out the window.

From what you've described, John, it sounds like your skills are indeed worth more than introductory wages. If it weren't for the rigidity of collective bargaining, you could approach an airline and *negotiate your own package* based upon what you have to offer the airline.

But the system as it is, ramrods new employees into starting wages, whatever their skills.

John,

With your experience, I still highly recommend you get your resume to both AirTran and Southwest. You will definitely get more than US$9/hour in wages with your type of experience, that's to be sure. You might want to consider joining JetBlue and working out of their FLL operations, too.

I think at the rate things are going Florida will be dominated by AirTran, Delta and Southwest for regional flights, with American Airlines and JetBlue Airways for longer flights.

You should consider yourself very lucky that because you worked at PBI, you have the option to join AirTran, Southwest or JetBlue at PBI or FLL with reasonably short commutes from home.
