Which Airlines Has Recovered The Most 9/11

Thu Apr 04, 2002 8:48 am

Of the airlines which one in your opinion has made the greatest comeback to pre 9/11.Not considering WN and CO since they are and were in a better financial status than the other U.S majors. My vote would have to go to,,,,,,,drum roll AA.What a surprise.

I'd say AirTran. They are posting fairly decent numbers for March considering that they have increased over 20% in ASMs year over year, while most airlines are still down about 5-12% in ASM growth.

And why not include WN and CO? Just b/c they were doing better than the others doesn't mean that they can't make a comeback. Or would that then make AA third in your book?

WestJet, but I think the suffering will start NOW because of the new security fee in Canada.

I think he meant US Airlines, although I'm not sure.

If he means all then change my answer to WestJet too.

Of the major airlines, Southwest is in the best position. Believe it or not, CO is not amongst the top group in positioning right now because of insurance issues regarding to their leased aircraft. I believe Delta and Alaska join Southwest in Tier 1, Continental, American in Tier 2, Northwest, United and American West in Tier 3 and US Airways in Tier 4. However, shifts can easily occur in this industry, and I think we will have a better idea of the shape of these airlines once the Q1 stats come out in 1-3 weeks.

I have to say Frontier has positioned thereselves the best, but if you look at any charter airline they are doing the best out of any of the airlines.

But th post said recovered the best.. southwest and airtran never really had much losses after 9/11. It mostly affected the majors, out of which I thin Delta is dong the best. It has been doing the best out of any US major since 9/11

DL fly boy: I don't think that DL has recovered the best, as they are still cutting aircraft. I can't find the specifics, but I believe they will be down 50 mainline aircraft at the end of either 2002 or 2003 compared to 9/10/01.

I would have to Say SkyService. With the loss of RootsAir in May, which cost us Millions, then 9/11, We were close to shutting down. Now since the closure of Canada3000, we have grown emensly. From 5 aircraft to 21 overnight. More Carribean Routes, the signing on of Signature, and Conquest, and the hiring of more than 400 flight attendants, with a permanant base in Vancouver now open, and a Temp base, but could go Permanant, in Halifax. Replacing the fleet by year end with All 319's. Keeping the 330 year round. I think that we have made one hell of a comeback. American has done well, Southwest never really hurt that much compared to the rest of them, so I wouldn't really include them as with WestJet. Air Canada is still in a poor situatition since and Before 911.

Considering Continental is the ONLY major (excluding major/low fare Southwest) that is actually MAKING MONEY, I think they win hands down.

Were they making money before? yes. Were the others? no.

But, Co is making money, AA, DL, UA, US are losing zillions of dollars a day STILL.

Regardless of the fact that CO made money prior to 9/11 and is making money now, it is NOT in the best shape of the majors. As other posters have already noted, DL appears to be in the best shape of the majors. There is a set of circumstances prevalent at CO (lease of aircraft, insurance issues, etc.) that makes CO very, very vulnerable.

Besides all of the leased aircraft, CO still does not have as much money in the bank as the others.

CAL wasn't smart enough to have a line of credit (Gordon wouldn't pay for it), or smart enough to be saving any cash, and Bethune takes a bonus for last year. Highly leveraged and into high interest loans already. Lots of myth vs. reality on their actual health seen on this forum too much.

Money in the bank is increasing not decreasing. At the moment CO has 1.2 billion in the bank. I know that someone said that Northwest has the best cash balance at 2.6 billion, but the 1.2 will see CO just fine

While I in no way hold NW-ELITE responsible for the article he posted, I found a few comments within it to be rather pathetic.

To imply that there is equality between Gordons comments about his lack of responsibility for Sept 11th and therefore his lack of responsibility for the rise of Continental airlines.

The article implies that he didn't do much for Continental and cannot claim credit for its success, and lays down the reasons for Continentals success at the growth of the US economy. While the economy clearly has an impact, then why is continental doing better than most airlines ?, why is it's operational performance quarter after quarter wiping the floor with the competition ? Shallow and innacurate journalism.

In regards to his taking a bonus, well done to Gordon, you deserve it

I would have to say as a Regional carrier I would say ACA (UAX/DL Conx). We have kept the routes increasing. We also have the most amount of money in the bank verses the other regional carriers in the US.

I think the title should read "Which airline has been least affected by 9/11?"

Hands down, Southwest.
Continental would be second...but a distant second.

If I offended people for the article I posted, I am sorry. I just thought that this would be of interest since the post was about airline recovery.
