The aircraft was operating as PA845, San Francisco-Tokyo, with 199 pax and 11 crew. PA845 circled for almost two hours while dumping fuel and assesing damage. Two passengers were seriously injured when debris burst through the passenger cabin floor after striking the approach structure. Several passengers were also injured when the escape slides failed to work properly.
N747PA, number two off the line, was not a write off. Later it would be leased to Air Zaire, renamed Clipper Sea Lark, and renamed a final time, in 1981, Clipper Juan T. Trippe.
