Pan Am 747 Crash Landing @ Sfo?

Thu Apr 04, 2002 11:24 am

I have just seen footage of an old-liveried Pan Am 747 landing 'off runway' at SFO during the 70's. It apeared to be travelling between the runway and the taxi-way and when it stoped was in a nose up attitude. The program was about escape chutes and the 747's failed to act properly because of high winds. Does anyone have any info about this incident, e.g was the 747 a write-off and what route was it flying e.t.c.

Clipper America
07/30/1971
Boeing B-747(N747PA)
Location: San Francisco, California
TIME: c 15:28
Flight: 845
210 Aboard / 0 Fatal

The aircraft struck approach lights at the departure end of runway during takeoff. Miscalculation of available runway length and takeoff speed by crew. Erroneous information from the dispatcher. The aircraft was named Clipper America.

The aircraft was operating as PA845, San Francisco-Tokyo, with 199 pax and 11 crew. PA845 circled for almost two hours while dumping fuel and assesing damage. Two passengers were seriously injured when debris burst through the passenger cabin floor after striking the approach structure. Several passengers were also injured when the escape slides failed to work properly.

N747PA, number two off the line, was not a write off. Later it would be leased to Air Zaire, renamed Clipper Sea Lark, and renamed a final time, in 1981, Clipper Juan T. Trippe.
