Srilankan's Domestic Plans

Fri Apr 05, 2002 10:19 pm

It appears Sri Lankan Airlines are looking at flying to Jaffna, in the north of Sri Lanka. The government has once again let private operators recommence commercial flights from Colombo to Jaffna, and it appears UL are looking at this option.
Would be interesting to see how this works out, for startes, they would have to look at introducing a brand new type of aircraft into the fleet, like one or two BAe 146s/Fokker 70s/ATRs or something. The A320s would be too large for that sort of operation.
Anyone have any ideas?

I dont think that airport could handle an A330!
I doubt the runway can handle such a big jet.

Well, thats why I was asking about more details regarding the airport and the rwy. I just hear planes about flying as a promotion or advertising "gag" into Jaffna...

I think 2-4 A320 or so weekly flights to Jaffna might work. As I understand there is exceptional demand for Colombo-Jaffna. Apparently there is 3 daily An-124 (30 pax each?) flights operated by Helitours (Govt owned) and they all have 100% loads, and plus the fact it is very hard to get tickets, as there is so many people wanting to go there.

I think maybe routing a Colombo-Chennai flight via Jaffna, might be very popular. As the main language in both Jaffna and Chennai is Tamil, and there has been historically and now some very close links between the two. What do you think?

What is the population in Jaffna like? I mean, once the area is fully open and like that, I take it the population will more or less increase a bit??
I think a daily flight of some sort will work to Jaffna. A twice daily (morning and evening) operation might work too, for the business/government traffic. So in that respect, maybe a smaller twin jet will work. On the other hand, if the average demand is greater than what I think it appears to be, then the A320 could well work. The smaller jet though would give it more operational flexibility. I really wonder if the EK management will look at introducing another smaller type of aircraft.

Is the RWy at jaffna still serviceable? the Jaffna base has been targetted by Tamil extremists and Govt troops numerous times, and it is highly unlikely that they left the Rwy untouched!

In more peaceful times, IC used to operate 737-200's and A300B2's into Jaffna from points in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu which also has a large Tamil population. didnt UL operate from Trichy in India to Jaffna using DC10's? So i dont thnk a A330 should find it difficult to operate from there!

Well, Gardermoen, the population of Jaffna is aprox 500K (1999 census), there won't be too much change comapared to now.

Swissgabe, I am not sure of the airport's current condition nor the length of the runway. The govt domestic flights land at a military airport nearby by Jaffna. Reading this, one might assume that the Airport in Jaffna might not be able to recieve aircrafts, but I am not a 100% sure about it.  Smile

Well, as Indianguy sad, if they operated into Jaffna with an A300 and Dc10 (L10?) it shouldn't be any problem flying into with an A330.

I heard that the Rwy should be ok and it meight just need a few "makeups" to serve it with passenger flights. Another problem could be the Passenger Terminal which meight has to be replaced or reconstructed...

Btw: whats the 3 letter code of Jaffna?

There are two airports that close in Jaffna?
Uptil now, where did the government flights land? I take it the terminal facilites were very basic where these flights (and Lion Air flights in the past) landed at.

Indianguy, UL never had DC10s and never flew to Jaffna at all. However, AIr Ceylon in like the 60s/70s, had some Colombo-Jaffna-Madras flights.
