1 New Long-haul For SAS Every Year To 2008

Mon Apr 08, 2002 5:39 am

During the SAS press conference in Tokyo on Feb 4(the PR for new A340-300 flight to Tokyo), SAS' CEO has announced that from 2003 to 2008, SAS will launch 1 new long-haul route per year.

I guess 2003 will see the launch flight of San Francisco?

I can only hope that IAH or DFW will be one but somehow I doubt it. It would still be nice to see a new foreign carrier @ a Texas airport.

On the trans-Atlantic side I see Boston, Toronto, Miami, San Francisco, and Sao Paulo has strong possibilities.

Hmmm, interesting. Guess we'll be seeing additional orders for the A330/A340 then?

Perhaps Shanghai, Osaka and Seoul? And a return to Hong Kong and Delhi?

Possibly the revival of dehli, hong kong and a few more services to north american cities seems likely. Could we finally see SAS enter into the Australian market?

I could really imagine SAS doing a Sydney service one day, that would be fantastic if they would, I would fly them as much as possible. We need a hell of a lot more international, especially European and American carriers in Australia since soo many have left us over the last decade.

I would love to see SAS down under but I doubt they ever would. SAS is very much an airline that focuses on business class, and as we all know, Australia is very much a leisure market. The low yields out of Australia would not make the calculations right. Also, their Star partners, SQ and TG already fly here, so I would like to atleast see them codeshare. That way, atlease we get an SK flight number on the departure screens!

SK actually have many fares out of Australia despite that they don't fly their own planes down here.

hmmm CPH-BKK-SYD/MEL/BNE?

SAS has been very focused on business pax, but recently they have announced that their focus on economy travel will be increased in the future.

Euro airlines to Aus rely on transit pax as well as O&D, but Scandinavia is so far north there is no real possibility of carrying pax onwards to any destination other than Scandinavia itself. SAS will never fly to Australia.

Perhaps Dubai (DXB) could be a future SK destination aswell? There are no direct airlinks between Scandinavia and the Gulf despite many travellers. The market is clearly underserved.
This depends of course whether Emirates or Qatar joins Star alliance. Both airlines are possible candidates according to media.

IMO the likely candidates for new destinations seem to be:
Shanghai
San Francisco
Miami

Plus the possibly revived routes:
Delhi
Hong Kong

Just guessing, though...

ARN,

Didn't Sri Lankan fly Colombo-Dubai-Stockholm recently? Once their fleet recovers from their terrorist incident, they might come back.

I think that SAS, with the introduction of the A340's and A330's will have the range that is needed to fly to Hong Kong and back. As far as I can recall, it was mentioned that the return trip (HKG-CPH) usually had to do a fuel stop on the way, which adds to the costs (plus the time).

Also, the Gulf region could be targeted.

Are they any plans to return to Hong Kong? They suspended their HKG route in 1998 because of poor load factors related to the Asian financial crisis & the high landing fees at the then 1-year old Chek Lap Kok, so it didn't turn out to be very profitable. I'd love to see their relatively new A340s here. They look outstanding in the new SAS livery.

And for how long was SAS serving Hong Kong before they stopped?

Thanks
Hkg82.

Arsenal@LHR,

SAS flies EWR (3x daily), ORD (2x daily), IAD (daily), and SEA (daily) in north america.

Yeah i forgot SEA and IAD. That's quite a impressive list of destinations for SAS considering it's one of the "smaller" european majors.

Hkg82, SAS started the Hong Kong route sometime in 1992/3 I think, definetly before 1994. It started off twice weekly and increased up to five a week.

I just got back from a trip to SIN with SAS and I must say their new 340s are sooo nice! I flew in business and that was amazing comfort and service of course,I strolled around to the back of the bus during the stopover at BKK and the economy is quite nice too,
I think they have an advantage in their new planes and nice cabinservice to lure more passengers from other countries onto new routes.

Oh, I forgot SEA!
Well, it's too only operated from CPH. It's hard to remember that SAS flies to other cities than EWR and ORD if you're living outside ARN.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I remember some Boeing fan promised that when SAS started using the A340 to SEA (home of the Boeing factory, you know Big grin) he would run up and down the runway while waving Starts & Stripes over his head  Big thumbs up

Solnabo, you forgot IAD and they they don't fly to SFO. SAS' US network:

ARN-EWR
ARN-ORD

CPH-EWR
CPH-IAD
CPH-ORD
CPH-SEA

EWR-ARN
EWR-CPH

IAD-CPH

ORD-ARN
ORD-CPH

SEA-CPH

All daily except CPH-EWR/EWR-CPH, which is 2x daily. Pre-9.11 they also had EWR-OSL and announced SFO-CPH. In the past they flew LAX-CPH and I am assuming they flew to JFK before EWR. In the late 1980s they planned MIA-CPH and MIA-OSL, but both were canceled after thier frustation with the inability to get the route rights and the Gulf War.

SAS started operating the CPH-HKG route when they received the 762 which had the range to do the flight non-stop.But with only 150 seats,it was very difficult to operate with a profit. The 763 were not much better, more often than not having to make a refueling stop enroute.
SFO will definitely be the next new Intercont. destination for SAS.It is currently "on hold",not cancelled.
Shanghai was planned and permission to operate had been applied for,but the Chinese saw no need for this route for their own purpose and would not operate,so they said "No!"
A resumption to HKG is also planned, but not before there are enough A330/340 to fly the present route network, having replaced all of the 76's.
As for other destinations, there are many being looked into but no firm plans.
Interestingly, last year (or was it in 2000?) the Scandinavian Aviation Authorities and the Australian one signed an agreement regarding air transport between these 2 regions, but so far not even a rumour here in SAS.Scandinavians travelling to Australia with Star Alliance are being primarily booked on Thai, with Lauda being an alternative.
