LanChile As It Is Today.

Tue Apr 09, 2002 8:35 am

LanChile is today one of the worlds best airlines in that it is a current member of the oneworld alliance & it has a young and modern fleet of aircraft in many configurations for cargo and passenger use. LanChile has an expanding route network and it has recently been growing infrastructure even more with new cargo facilities in Santiago and Miami, new offices in Chile and further developments in Sydney in accordance with the new flights to reach the Australian continent as from July.

Despite the September 2001 setbacks, LanChile has maintained a consistency in increased loading on key routes such as its LAX, MAD, LIM and EZE services to name a few. Much to the annoyance of some South Americans, LanChile has been dominating alot of the passenger and cargo traffic in the region because of situations that have left countries such as Peru and Venezuela without a reliable international airline to satisfy the needs of the loads.

LanChile is the main holder in the following airlines:
LanExpress (Chile-domestic)
LanCargo (Chile-worldwide cargo)
LanPerú (Perú-domestic)
The Lan group also offers extension services such as:
LanCourier (global courier link)
LanBoxUSA (U.S product/parcel delivery)

LanChile is a growing airline with a great future potential and a high level of excellence in service. The Chilean flag-carrier works efficiently side by side with its oneworld alliance partners such as Iberia on European sectors, American on many U.S routes and Qantas with their new Pacific codeshare agreements.

i wouldn't really qualify lanchile of either being on the world's best airlines, neither of being the 3rd world best airline.

lanchile is far behind, United, british airways, air france, lufthansa, JAL, qantas, aer lingus etc etc...

but i think it's doing quite a good job so far.

Yazoo hopefully you just didn't say Chile is a third world country, because it's not.
On to another thing LanChile is an arline that has all the ingredients to keep on growing and become even a better airline . It could be said that Lan Chile is South America's healthiest airline (financially wise).

Wasn't it one of only two(the other being Varig) South American airlines to make a profit a few years ago?

Well said Chepos, although in the technical definition a "third world" country is anything not alligned with the US or the Soviet Union. That includes all of Latin America but the whole "worlds" issue is sort of nil now as there is no more Soviet Union. Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, etc. are referred to as mid-developing countries to be politically correct.

Anyways Lan is not a world-class airline but seems to be a great one as most people have great things to say about it and it is countinously expanding.

Ok! mid-developped sounds correct. I thought he was implying that chile was a developped country.

anyway, there is emirates for the "upper-mid-developped-world" category that is truly a world-class airline.

South african is O.K

I thought that Varig was the best financially-wise airline in south america. And even if it isn't, it is still for me the king of Latin America. It has far more destinations planes and in my opinion better service than Lan Chile.

I have to agree, Lan Chile is a good airline, but that is because they have been lucky. The collapse of Aero Peru, and Aerolineas Argentinas pull-out from LAX have helped them ALOT. They have created a monopoly with this particular market which once AR was king in (Which I really miss). There are more Peruvians and Argentineans flying on the routes to LAX, and JFK I am sure. ( I am VERY SURE about LAX). Lan Chile got too confident when they started JFK-SCL with the 767 that is now operated via LIM and GYE I believe. However LAN Chile is not among "world class" airlines around they are very good, but they don't match the airlines like VARIG and one AR which was/can still be the cream of the spanish speaking South American crop. I love LAN but it is not the best  Big thumbs up. COME BACK TO LAX ARGENTINAS YOU ARE VERY MISSED!

What about TAM? i thought they wre doing pretty well too.

Also Third world descirbes later european colonies (so europe would be 1st world, US etc, 2nd, and some of Africa and some of south America) would be third. However the use of this word has sort of been changed to mean undeveloped countried. At any rate, Chile is classified as a developing country by the IMF, along with Brazil, Argentina, and over 120 other nations. They define a devleoping country as a nation that has an advanced economy but is still transitioning. It is below devleoped countries, but above both less developed and least devolped on the list.

Yes I implied Chile is part of the developed world. Believe it or not there are other Latin American countries that are also part of the developed world. Like in all other countries of the world there is poverty in our countries but that dosen't mean Latin American countries fall in the category of third world countries.

Yazoo, I disagree. Chile has a healthy economy, a wealthy population, and Santiago de Chile is a very modern, wealthy city. I do consider Chile a modern, first-world nation.

As for LanChile, I have flown them a few times, and throughly enjoy them. IMO, they are a world class airline, and last month installed all-new, state of the art PTV systems in all three classes of all thier 767s and A340s. They have a modern, well kept fleet as well, and, among Latin American airline, they are by far my favourite (I'm sorry, I haven't flown them in two years, but my most recent experiences with AR were not world class). I have flown many airlines considered among the best in the world, and I do consider them up there as one of the world's best, from my own experiences.

LanPeru, they fly JFK-SCL 4x a week and JFK-GYE-SCL 3x a week. They stop in GYE because they are able to offer the only non-stop service between New York and Guayquil, and they have an agreement with Ecuatorania to provide service between the US and Ecuador (LA flies JFK-GYE-SCL 3x a week and MIA-UIO-GYE daily).

Chepos, you have to admit it, your country falls into the developping world, in no way chile would be considered a developped country.

what about other countries that are still ranked in the developping countries and that are more advanced than Chile, say, umm turkey, emirates, i believe even south africa is more developped than chile.

"your country"? I believe Chepos is a Puerto Rican going to school in Florida..... At any rate, Chile does have an advanced economy, I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

Yes I have to agree with ya yazoo, I think South Africa (since abolition of apatheid) has been turning more developed than chile.

LanPeru: I recall reading somewhere, that the restart of EZE/LIM/LAX is programmed as anear expansion of a now "new" Aerolineas, which in the last months is gratefully surprising me. FA's are far more frendlier than before, they are offering abetter in flight service, they are relaunching routes on after another (If I don't remember wrongly, they relaunched 5 cities last month).

As Doug said I'm Puerto Rican and I go to school in Daytona Beach, Fl... I feel the neeed to defend Chile because lots of people classify the every single Latin country as poor, underdeveloped and full of guerilla warfare. And by the way Puerto Rico would not fall under third world standards either.

i agree that chile has a more developped economy and infrastructure than say, Kenya or Somalia, but i wouldn't go as far as saying that chile is part of the developped world, as a matter of fact i was checking a list by the IMF ( imf.org ) and in the developping countries ranking , chile is ranked way behind, israel, turkey, emirates, south africa, brazil and some other countries.

Speaking of the "new" AR, has anyone flown them recently?? I am asking to see if they are doing better. They seem to be with the relaunching of many key routes. Maybe they will become the world-class airline they used to be years ago. I think on April 17th they will unveil their new livery.

Here is a good article on Chile's economy:
http://www.ecee.org/pubs/assess/chile/Chile1.htm

Let's put it this way, Chile's economy and standard of living is not like the United States, but it in no way, shape or form compares to that of 3rd world nations such in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and most of the rest of Latin America. Chile has an excellent standard of living compared to 90% of the world.

Just so you know, Chile is not as "sweet" as you think, they have the modern Santiago de Chile, but they still have what every other country has, lack of jobs etc... to name a A few, I have family in Chile ( they are well off) but Chile is not as developed as you think. I will confirm this when I go to Chile next year!

Let's make things clear:

1.-Chile: As I chilean, I must say some words in this forum: Yes, we're not a developed country, but we're getting closer everyday.
As a matter of fact, Chile can easily be right now, the most developed country in Latin America. We have a high amount of income average, and also in the technologycal area, we are the most developed nation, with the most PC's,internet connections and mobile phones amount per capita in the region. Also Chile is the fourth latin american country in amount of exports after Mexico(90 million inhabitants), Brazil(160 millions) and Argentina(40 millions), and above other large countries, like Colombia(40 millions),Venezuela(30 millions) and Peru(30 millions), despite the fact that Chile has a small population...only 15 million inhabitants...and adding the fact that Chile is a very isolated nation. Well, again, we're not a developed nation, we're a suffered country that has worked hard for reaching the place where we are now.

2.LanChile: Of course it is not a "world class airline" but it is getting closer everyday. You cannot compare the amount of airplanes or destinattions LanChile has with Varig's. Varig has the largest domestic market in Latin America, and the chilean one is 10 times smaller.
And about Aerolineas Argentinas, come on...LanChile is far superior.

Go Chile...Go LanChile...!!!

LanPeru, of course Chile has it's underdeveloped areas, and it's poverty rate is still not that great (better than a lot, though), but America has it's underdevopled areas too...parts of West Virginia and Northern Mississippi, for example. Your right though, this is a discussion of LanChile, not Chile, so I won't go off topic anymore.
