Where Will SAA Use It 1st A340-600's?

Wed Apr 10, 2002 9:04 pm

It is with baited breath that we wait to see where SAA will deploy it first few A340-600's when they receive them later this year. Here are some possibilties:

ATLANTA: Since new US regulations have been imposed, SAA has re-routed its thrice weekly JNB-CPT-FLL-ATL flight [SA209] via Ilha do Sal (SID) in the Cape Verde Islands instead of Fort Lauderdale. This adds up to an hour to the journey. The A340-600 has the ability to fly CPT-->ATL non-stop as well as provide more payload on the return legs. The ATL-JNB and ATL-CPT flights are currently flown by a B747-400 with payload restrictions in place at certain times of the year. Placing A346's on the ATL routes would free up B744's to be redeployed on the London/Frankfurt routes and thus allow the 2 leased ex-Swissair B743's (ZS-SKA,B) to be returned to their leasor.

LONDON: This is SAA's prime business route and could be a good route to place start the Airbus fleet on as it provides immediate exposure to the airline's frequent travellers.

ZURICH: Apparently, the airline is charged major fines for operating B747Classics as they are unable to comply with strict noise legislations.

HONG KONG: Currently operated by B747-200's. Which I understand is the longest route operated by a B747 "Classic". Being such a long flight, it is subject to payload restrictions, especially on a hot day out of JNB.

FRANKFURT: A346's will provide much more cargo capacity than the B743's that currently fly the route.

Obviously, as the airline receives additional A346 aircraft, they are likely to be placed on all the above routes, I'm just really curious to see where the A346's will operate FIRST!

Any other thoughts?

I think the initial routes for SA's A346 fleet will be JNB/CPT-GIG/GRU or JNB/CPT-PER, routes that require planes that don't suffer the ETOPS 180 limitations.

The GRU & PER routes are currently handled by B747-200's and B747SP's. They are not regarded as prime business routes and therefore will probably continue to be served by B747's until SAA's A340-300's arrive in 2004. There is still talk of SAA leasing Lufhansa A340-200's from February next year as an interim measure until their A340-300s arrive.

Q For SAA201

Thu Apr 11, 2002 8:14 am

Hi SAA201
I'm puzzled by something, and I hope you can help me out. SAA placed an order for long-haul jets to replace all the B747 aircraft except the -400s, or so I thought. Print ads by the airline state that the entire fleet is being replaced by Airbus jets. So, does this mean the -400s are on the way out. The A340 order only covers 12 aircraft (I think), enough to replace the classic 747s, but that still leaves 8 747-400s. Are they going? If they are to be replaced, then that will mean about 3000 seats less-surely not?
If you have any news, please let me know. I just cannot imagine SAA without any 747s, as they are such a part of the SAA long-haul image
thanks

With an expansion of thier long-haul fleet, it would be really nice if they returned to MIA or FLL using the 340s. I wouldn't rule it out, though not in the short-term.

SAA ordered 9 A340-600 and 6 A340-300E that's 15 planes not 12. The 744 will stay with the fleet still, since they do not need to replace them yet. They have not ordered any aircrafts to replace those 744s, so I imagine they are going to stay in the fleet.
Will they use the A340-600 to fly to JFK, any one knows?

Regarding replacing the 747-400's...

Perhaps SAA would be the perfect launch customer for the A380-700? (AKA A380SP)  Smile

With just slightly larger capacity than a 747-400, and incredible range, it could be a great 747-400 replacement for airlines with many ultra-long routes, like SAA.

Hi all,

I got this message from another newsgroup. You can view the full message at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/asanews/message/1632

"First A340-600 Deliveries:

Nov 02 x 1
Dec 02 x 2
Jun 03 x 1
Nov 03 x 2

First aircraft handover is actually October but the aircraft will then have the LOPA modified from three class to two class configuration at Sogerma,
('twin bogs' not Bordeaux).

A340-200 leased from DLH will be for between 12 and 18 months. These will be replaced by A340-300.

A340-200 Lease deliveries and tail numbers:

Feb 03 D-AIBA
Mar 03 D-AIBC
Apr 03 D-AIBD
Jul 03 D-AIBE
Aug 03 D-AIBH
Oct 03 D-AIBF"

If its true, it is very interesting that SAA will only operate its A340-600's in a 2 class configuration. At the moment all its B747's are configured in 3 class layout.

The B747-400's will stay in the fleet for the next 5-8 years at least. They are then likely to be replaced by more A340-600's and possibly A380's.

A 2 class layout for SAA A340-600 would not surprise me, LH is doing that as well and plans on using them on routes where the demand for first class is not big enough. Maybe SAA will go that way, too. BTW, which are, besides JNB-ATL, SAA's B747-400 routes?
