Qantas Increases Trans Tasman Flights!

Fri Apr 12, 2002 3:30 pm

From July 1 Qantas will operate an additional 9 flights between Australia and New Zealand bringing the total number of Qantas flights across the tasman to more than 100 return flights per week! Qantas also operates daily non-stop from Auckland to Los Angeles and from July 1 will code share on 3 return services per week between Sydney and Santiago via Auckland, Qantas also codeshares on several flights between Auckland and several destinations in the South Pacific with flights operated by other airlines.

The new flights are;
3 return services between Sydney and Christchurch.
3 return services between Melbourne and Christchurch.
1 return flight between Sydney and Auckland.
2 return services between Melbourne and Auckland.

All flights will be operated by 2 class 767-300's!

This is good to see even more QF flights to NZ.
I wonder what Air New Zealand will do in reply to this?

What can NZ do?

Not a heck of a lot unfortunately! Reduction in fleet size etc., leaves them quite weak, this is QF twisting the knife.

I agree maybe NZ will put 733's out of AKL but this would be silly with QF using larger aircraft

I wish NZ would either make a profit/break even or go bankrupt. Perhaps this will push the envelope...

Having just recently done this trip twice, I can vouch that this is gonna be a highly profitable route. Both times the aircraft was full to capacity, I have not seen that on any of the flights I have had inside Australia. In fact only once out of the last 7 flights did I have to sit next to anybody at all

Just because its full does not necessarily mean it is "highly profitable".
