Intra City Jet Service

Sat Apr 13, 2002 1:35 am

What city pairs have received scheduled jet service at one time or another that were different airports, but within the same metropolitan area? I'd like airline, a/c type, and approximate dates.

as an example: was there ever any jet service between the following cities:

here are some that I know of:

Alaska MD-80 late 80's/early 90's: ONT-BUR
TWA 727, MD-80 late 80's: ONT-PSP
TWA MD-80 mid 90's: ONT-SNA
Northwest MD-80 early 90's: ONT-SNA
Continental DC-9 (Proud Houston) late 80's IAH-HOU

Alaska Airlines had MD-80 service from SFO-OAK years ago. Saw it in the Guiness Book of World Records for shortest commercial JET service.

I flew from IAH to HOU on a Continental 737-500, in September 2000. Flight time was about 7 minutes. I think that CAL has a maintenance base in HOU, and instead of ferrying an empty plane they made it a revenue flight. Smart I guess, there were about 30 passengers on board.

There was never any jet service between the NY airports as far as I know, but for a very long time their was NY helicopter service that connected all three as well as the Wall Street and West Side heliports.

Continental Express ran 5 daily ATR's between EWR and Islip for maybe 8 years or so, but Islip and EWR aren't that close.

There's a cargo carrier called Jet Airways that has daily flights on a PHL-EWR-JFK routing.

American used to have a 727 flight once a day between FLL-MIA. The flight originated in Dallas stopped in FLL then continued onto MIA then went on the opposite routing. I used to fly from FLL-MIA in order to rack up miles back in 80's when AA was offering triple miles. I got 2 free r/t to Paris as a result of that.

Delta used to operate MIA-FLL as a continuation of their 11:30 PMish flight to MIA. It was scheduled with 757 and 767 and 763 aircraft if I remember correctly, but I am sure other aircraft operated the route. When I flew on that late ATL-MIA-FLL flight once there was an equipment change from a 757 to an L1011. I got off in MIA, so I didn't get to experiance the 21 mile, approximatly eight minute flight to FLL. That would have been pretty neat to experience on an L1011 though.

this is a tad off subject, but I've flown the Continental express EFD Ellington Field (Houston) to IAH- INtercontinental Houston several times (always props though) but there is no cost added for this flight, it is free if you have a continuing ticket. They used to run these to Hobby as well. How does this make money? I like the service if I am going to see folks in the SE side of town, and the flight seems popular. I'm guessing CO want's to keep folks away from Hobby and other airlines.

How much does CO Express charge for a one-way and roundtrip ticket from EFD to IAH? Do you think there are people that use it to commute across town?

No. The logistics of it would dictate that. The traffic in Houston is horendous, however going to IAH to fly to EFD would take much, much longer then the across town drive. Especially with security, etc., etc.

Well, If you want to count non-sked too CO flies a 735 every year CLE-BKL for the air show. It's about a 10 mile flight and can be accomplished in under 5 minutes. Usually one or two "missed approaches" are conducted however (they don't approve fly-bys too often) so time is lengthened and pax can get up in the cockpit.
