A346 Up Close

Sat Apr 13, 2002 6:06 am

Got a look inside and outside at the A346 today. I don't recall the registration, but the MSN is 376.

The damn thing is loooong! She'll only fit at 2 specific gates at EWR (B55 & B62). There are cameras fitted fore and aft on the landing gear to assist the captain during ground movement. The engines are much larger than those on the A342/343's. The inboard engines have to be only 2-3 feet off the ground. The width and length of the wings is also very impressive.

Nothing too exciting or different in the cabin. Lumbar support on the Y class seats felt quite nice, not to mention the luxury of F & C class seating. Restrooms quite cramped though considering the overall spaciousness of the rest of the plane.

There is the novelty of lower deck crew rest/galley area. I'm told on LH's version, it will be full standing height. On this particular aircraft it wasn't.

Overall a very handsome aircraft. Now we'll just have to see if carriers can fill these things consistently and at a good yield.

"There are cameras fitted fore and aft on the landing gear to assist the captain during ground movement."

Actually there is one on the fuselage centreline aft of the nose gear and another at the top of the fin.

I'm kicking myself for missing the A340-600 at EWR. I was working and not aware it was here. When I found out, I drove down to the terminal but it took off 20 minutes prior. Crying

Ewrffvs,

Lower deck crew rest areas, galleys, or lavatories is nothing new for the A330/A340 series. It is available on all A330's and A340's, but not many airlines opt for it since it cuts down on cargo space.

But lower deck restrooms and galleys are pretty popular on charter A330's, since charter airlines carry less cargo.

The camera is called the Camera Aid ...sthg. It is used as axuliary guidence for the pilots when taxi-ing. Pilots are not supposed to rely on it when taxi-ing the acft. Pilots should be able to taxi the acft w/o the cameras.
Over-steering Technique is highly recommended when taxi-ing into a bay.

Wasnt the 346 supposed to have the moulded 777 style interiors? Or is it standard Airbus?

Hi

The aircraft that you were looking at had seats in the cabin. Was this something that Airbus had done just to
show how it will look, or will this aircraft be delivered to an airline. If so who.

Also with the lower deck Virgin did at one stage say that they were going to put passenger facilities there. They did talk about showers, lounges and even cabins.
Will the aircraft they get in June have any of this.

Thanks

Rich

The reg. was F-WWCC. It left JFK around 9ish on it's way over to EWR. I was told it had a standard Airbus interior and will be replaced with a Virgin interior as soon as it's online.

Richcandy,

The seats and outfitting was done by Airbus for doing testflights with passengers in order to test out all aspects of the aircraft under somewhat realistic conditions.

Before it is delivered to Virgin, I'm sure they'll rip out all or most of it, and re-outfit it to Virgin specs.
