The Launch Of SQ Spacebeds On The B772 And B744

Sat Apr 13, 2002 2:04 pm

The first route to have the spacebeds on the B744s will be on the Singapore - London sector. Earliest would be 12th May 2002 or the latest would be 6th June 2002. Second route would be Singapore - Tokyo - Los Angeles

The first route to have the spacebeds on the B772s will be on the Singapore - Hong Kong - Las Vegas route sector on the 2nd Of August when SQ operates its maiden flight on that day.

Best Regards

Excellent news 9V-SPK.

Quite surprising that SYD won't be the second route to get the spacebed. But I can see the logic as it is a shorter route than TKY - LAX or HKG - LAS.

The a/c deployed on the SIN-LHR route also operate SIN-SYD. The following site details the rego of which SQ a/c operate to/from LHR on any given day and I have seen almost all these a/c in SYD recently.

Singapore_Air, did you mean TYO (NRT) when you wrote TKY? I've never heard of TKY  Smile

I think SQ will put the spacebed planes on routes on which they compete with BA and CX first, especially BA since CX have them on only around 1/3 of the fleet.

Another question: Why would someone choose to take TG for example on SYD-BKK-LHR when they could take BA (SYD-BKK-LHR or SYD-SIN-LHR) or SQ ( SYD-SIN-LHR) and get a bed?

SQ deploying the spacebeds will really put their poor Asian cousin in the Star Alliance further behind.

Damn looks like I will miss the spacebed by just a few days...flying the SIN-NRT-LAX route in early June and again in late June...any possibility of getting one?

There have been talks about TG pulling out of Star Alliance for a long time now. There is really no need for 2 asian based Star carriers. However, TG knows about the tough competition as well and whined when Star accepted SQ.

However, looking at the current boardroom drama at TG, they have other priorities on thier hands right now.

With asian carriers such as SQ, MH, CX around, TG has definitely lost its past glamour. Its only saving grace is its inflight service and relatively cheap fares.

TG's cabin interior is definitely a few years behind the above mentioned asian carriers...with these airlines upgrading their products every now and then, there is no way TG can ever hope to catch up. Guess they are completely out of the league now.

TG has told the media before that since LH and SK can manage their european hubs really well, why can't SQ and TG?

Well, TG is facing some difficulties right now. But I'm pretty sure their service well go up to "above standard"
, like before.

Probably just a little rumor or something...but a Delta partners counter agent said he heard that SQ might leave star alliance and join skyteam? I can't imagine it happening...has anyone else heard about this?

WHY ON EARTH would SQ want to leave Star and join Skyteam, which is made up of a small number of not all that fantastic airlines? Besides DL and AF, the rest are not in the same rank as LH, SQ, AC etc.

Is this confirmed anywhere from SQ? If so, I may try to reroute an upcoming ticket!

Nickofatlanta, i can confirm that London will be the first to get the Spacebeds. As i said, it will be launched between May and June so you'd better wait till SQ announces offcially about the launch of the skybeds.

To conclude, SQ delayed the Skybed was because from what i heard, they don't want to clash with Cathay Pacific, which have already launched the new business class product. Not too sure about this though.

Best Regards

I'm more inclined to think that they delayed the launch of the spacebed to incur the costs of implementation in FY 2002/2003 instead of 2001/2002 which has been a bad year financially for them.

Docpepz,

Nope, not because of FY2001/2002, because implementing it in May/June would mean that they had already incurred the necessary costs way back in 2001.

Instead, I am more inclined to think that they wanted to see what CX came up with and make the necessary adjustments to their product from there. Call it sneaky, but this is the real cut-throat business world.

For those that went to AsianAerospace, I am sure you would have seen the Spacebed on display... do you think that was the final product?

I've heard of LHR being mentioned as the launch routes before, but have never heard about SIN - NRT - LAX soon thereafter. Is the LAX route confirmed?

Aduum: They are not short on cash and neither are they running out of cash anytime soon. It's just that they might make an overall loss in financial year 2001/2002 because of disastrous overseas investments.

And for the LHR route, not all three daily flights will have it right? I think only SQ322 and SQ321 will have it. (i.e. the flights that depart SIN and LHR in the evening)

James-It is a business class product that provides "the widest business class seat in the sky" and an almost flat (when reclined) sleeper seat. http://www.singaporeair.com/images/english/PressReleases/20010817b1.jpg
I am also interested in the confirmation if the Spacebeds will be placed on the SIN-NRT-LAX route second? Also, does anyone know when the spacebeds might be placed on this route? Thanks

Obviously later than the SIN - LON route.

It seems like there will be at least 2 planes fitted with the spacebeds and then it will be SIN - NRT - LAX turn. Someone said that SIN - SYD operates the same aircraft regs as SIN - LON, well seems that SQ will operate the older B744 while they install the spacebeds on the B744s. (No Reg. confirmation yet)

Best Regards
