Difference Between MD-82 And MD-83

Sun Apr 14, 2002 2:54 pm

I recently flew from DFW to LAX on a American MD-80 and was not sure if it was a 82 or 83. I was wondering what was the visual differences between the two types of aircraft.

Thanks.

There are no visual differences. The MD-83 carries more fuel and has more efficient engines, but that's it.

Thanks BWIrwy4

But I've seen some MD-80's with rounded rear ends of the fuselage like identical to the old DC-9's, and others with more pointed rear ends like the 717. See below

Those tailcones have been retrofitted heavily to the older planes, so it's impossible to make an ID based on that.

Thanks for clearing this misunderstanding up, I thought there was a type difference based on the tailcones.
