What Airports Have Observation Decks?

Mon Apr 15, 2002 3:10 am

This summer, I am thinking about going to an airport to spot. What major airports have observation decks open to the public? Thanks!

YYZ has a terrific one on Terminal 1. Intl terminal for AC and partners...so you're looking DOWN on AC 744, 343, 333, 763. LH 744, etc.

Unfortunately, T1 will be torn down in 2003.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Is that YYZ observation deck accessible to anyone...or just ticketed passengers?

Okinawa/Naha
Miyakojima(Not much of a major airport, though)

Just to info everyone - SFO just lost its' drive-in area to progress. I still don't know what that area is going to be, but it will be missed by alot of folks. The other spot you definitely need some binocs.

If you want a good deck go to ZRH. It is the greatest. They also do (suspended currently but hopefully coming back) bus tours where you get to get out at the runway intersection and watch planes takeoff and land right in front of your nose. (ear plugs recomended)

Kuala Lumpur - Sepang (KUL), inside the main terminal facing Terminal C and the Domestic one on the right and left side. Its with glasses and not open air.

Tokyo Narita (NRT) has a great one...

Zurich (ZRH) has one on Terminal B from where you have a great view over airlines taking off at Rwy 16 and using Terminal B and one side of Terminal A facing Terminal B.

Vientiane (VTE) at the Domestic Terminal, facing appron.

Singapore Changi (SIN) in both terminals, with glasses but ok...

Cleveland has a great deck in Concourse B but I think it's closed because of 9-11. A shame.

MSP has one. It's in the green concourse. It's no longer called GREEN concourse, so I don't know what it's called. It has 3 flights of stairs to get up to it. It has a PERFECT view of runway 30R/12L. It's awesome! You can look down on a whole bunch of planes!! I go to the airport about 4 hours early (seriously) before I go on a flight, and stay in the observation deck the whole time.

The new Downtown Miami Seaplane Base will have an observation deck (and aviation museum). Though commerical service is limited to 4-6 daily flights. It breaks ground in November.

Take elevators from main check-in area up to 8th floor.

I agree with Swissgabe about the observation deck at Narita, especially the one on Terminal One. It is perfectly situated so that you can see all the landings and take offs on the main runway aswell as aircraft taxiing by. I was there for three hours on March 24 and if you'd like to see my photos just email me at markh767@yahoo.ca and I'll send you a link to my album at Ofoto.com.
These three photos were obviously taken from the Terminal One deck.

Arthur Yu gave me the address to a great website about plane spotting in Japan but I can't remember the it!

EWR has a nice monorail connecting the three terminals; as it is levitated over the terminals, you get nice unobstructed views. Downsides: (1) movement of the monorail when it's not at one of the stations, (2) tinted glass. On a sunny day, however, one can snap decent pictures.

Auckland (AKL) has a nice observation deck in the International terminal with theatre style seating, although since they extended the gate area, the view isn't as good as it used to be.
If you want to watch from outside, they've even provided coin operated gas barbecues for your use (if they're still there).
There's also a purpose built carpark at the end of RW05 for viewing purposes.

Can someone tell me if the deck atop the theme building at LAX is still open? I have asked this before but just gotten many "I thinks..." Can someone confirm? Or will I have to pay $30 for some pasta and the view inside Encounters? Thanks RY

My hometown airport, Ottawa has some pretty good observation areas, but Terminal 1 in Toronto can't be beat. It was (still is for a bit longer) arguably one of the best places to spot in the world. Get there while you still can.

The general departure area from the gates in YOW is not bad since everything is at the one terminal.

I saw Deborah Grey there 2 weeks ago! Wonderful Alliance MP.

MEL has one above the QF domestic terminal with good views of the QF domestic and int'l aprons. Landing and take-off views depend on which runways are in operation.
