AA Overnight At Lga?

Mon Apr 15, 2002 7:40 am

To the AA experts --

Why do so many AA planes overnight at LGA? Every time I fly into LGA around 10:00pm, there are at least 10 AA planes around the airport -- some in the hangars, several parked outside the hangars, and several more at the AA gates. Can there be that many morning departures?

Why does AA have so many planes at LGA, yet their operations there are still smaller than DL's, who always seems to have fewer aircraft at their terminal than AA does in its areas?

Thanks,

Ezra.

They have three early morning departures to MIA alone.

DL's mainline flights early in the morning are primarily to ATL and CVG (and one to DFW). All they need are about 6 a/c to fill those flights.

Thanks for the replies!

Also, how much maintenance work does AA do at LGA? It seems that there's always a plane or two in thier hangar at LGA. Wouldn't it be more cost effective to do it elsewhere?

Well they have a hangar there, and it's in NYC where skilled labor can be found anywhere. I imagine it's mainly for storing flights, and doing little routine maintenance work..

Both A and B checks are done at LGA. With around 22 terminators and most of them S80s, it is an ideal place to get MX as there are quite a few aircraft to chose from. Anyone ever seen AA try and put a 757 in the hangar? The nose of the aircraft has to be lifted into the air so that the tail dips low enough to get through the door.

Ezra, AA has many originators out of LGA. There are several ORD, DFW, MIA trips as well as a YYZ, FLL and MCO to name a few. Gates 3, 5 and 7 are easy to tow up to from the mx line (that is where you see all the parked aircraft) but 2, 4 ,6, 8 and 10 are harder as traffic tends to be a problem for towing into the throat between the D and C Concourse.

LGA has 3 early AM flights to MIA, ORD, 2 to YYZ...that's 8 already. Probably at least 2 to DFW and STL.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

AA has 99 daily departures from LGA.
Reason for so many departures, is all the morning departures:

5:55am DFW 757
6:00am XNA ER3
6:00am ORD M80
6:07am STL 757
6:30am ORD M80
6:38am MIA 757
6:50am RDU ER3
7:00am ORD M80
7:00am DFW 757
7:15am MIA 757
7:30am DFW M80
7:30am HOU M80
8:00am ORD M80
8:00am DTW ER3
8:00am TPA M80
8:10am FLL 738
8:15am RDU 100
8:25am CLE ER3
8:30am YYZ M80
8:36am STL 757
8:40am PWM ER3
8:45am DFW 757
8:58am BNA 100
9:00am ORD M80
9:10am MIA M80
9:10am CMH ER3
9:25am ORF ER3
9:30am ORD M80
9:45am MCO 757
10:00am ORD M80

For the most part, the first mainlines from hub cities and points west don't arrive in the morning until 10am. Thus all the other aircraft overnight in LGA for the most part. They basically have 30 depatures between 6-10am.

Wow! With all those departures, I'm surprised AA isn't #1 at LGA???

Wow, I had no clue AA was that big at LGA. Just out of curiosity, does it compete with the JFK hub any?

Also, does AA have any aircraft permenantly based at JFK,EWR, and LGA? As an assumption, they probably have several 767s based at JFK.

I have been in AA's LGA terminal, and their terminal gets crowded pretty early.

Right now:
LGA has 99 daily departures
JFK has a 112...these numbers include Eagle ops.

Break-down:
LGA: 69 mainline, 30 Eagle
JFK: 66 mainline, 46 Eagle

Keep in mind, JFK gets much larger a/c than LGA.
LGA gets a ton of MD-80's, 738's, 757's, and of course its buzzing with all those jungle jets.
JFK's ops lean toward the larger aircraft...the get a ton of A-300's, 757's, 767's, and 777's, only a handful of 738's & MD-80s...Eagle ops are nearly 50/50 Saabs and ERJ's.

Delta and US are the largest airlines at LaGuardia. Delta mainline has 70+ departures including shuttle flights, and US (who's presence has considerably diminished) had well over 100 flights before September 11th. Those numbers however, have decreased since then.
