1st Class...not Always Better For Aviation Buffs?

Mon Apr 15, 2002 9:58 am

Flying home from FLL two days ago, I flew FLL-MSP-LAX-SJC, JUST so I could fly on a NW DC10, (took SW home from LAX). The DC-10 is my most favorite plane in the entire world, that thing is just a beast. Every time I fly on one (99% of the time it's w/ NW), I like to sit just in front of the engine (seat 16a)...great view and the sounds are different than the rest of the cabin. Checking in for my flight, they put me in first class (4a)...which I thought was cool, but I sorta wanted to have my normal seat (wierd, I know!) I could barely see the tip of the wing where I was sitting, couldn't see the engine, it wasn't as loud during take-off, which I love (lol) and it just felt different sitting in the front with only a few seats accross...

Am I the only one, or do some of you guys agree that sometimes 1st class isn't always better!? I thought I must be crazy to feel this way, but I was just not feelin' that flight, plus I'm not into the whole pampering and comfort thing unless I'm flying overseas. Next time, no 1st class!  Smile

p.s. I'll have to admit though, the 1st class attendants were very attentive and the meal we had was very very good. They even served an ice cream sundae afterwards!

Well I've only flown first class once.
I actually prefer to sit just aft of the wings so that I can watch the flaps working.

I did two flights yesterday and I one of them was in first and the other was in the main cabin. While I was traveling with a friend in first, I rather enjoyed the flight back home in coach. Too me, I dont care anymore unless im hungry.

Gotta agree with you in some ways. Ive never flown in first class, but earlier this year I had the oppurtunity to get a seat on the upper deck of a 747-200 as Qantas have economy seats there. I could just see the tip of the wing (I love to sit just in front or behind the wing) and the ride was awfully quiet and smooth as I wasnt sitting on top of the gear for once. Luckily the flight was at night so the sight seeing was worth much and I really wanted to get some sleep. But if it were daytime I would take the seat infront of or behind the wing.  Big grin

Umm... yeah, first class is better.  Big grin Hell, if it comes to better food and service versus getting to watch the flaps for five minutes of the flight, I'd take the former. Hands down.

Actualy I wish you could decide where you want your first class seat to be. Wouldn that be cool if before a flight you would say "I want 11 C First Classs and they change the seat to first class!  Big thumbs up I enjoy being in the rear of the plane where I can see the wing and watch everything that goes on.

I have a specific seat I like for each aircraft model and airline...Friends with United used to alway bump me to F/C which I thought was pretty chill, but I hated it! I mean sure the seats are awesome and you even get a hot towel (which at 12 the first time I sat up front I had no clue what it was for) but its in front of the bus! Everything happens in the back, I wouldnt trade my 25A/F on a UA 757 for a UA 777 First Class suite! Call me crazy, but I already tell myself that daily....Oh and last time on a DC10 up front I asked to get a coach meal, I wasn't really down for "fancy" crap they were serving, I'll take my United Box Lunch and Soda any day, oh with a side of flaps! Cheers...Ry

I hear you. WHen i would fly the American -10's to and from LAX and JFK (later changed to 762's  Sad) and the -10's from LAX and HNL and SFO my favorite seat was 12A, second row of coach, right by the wing. Your a smart man.

Always gotta sit right behind the wing just to see the flaps work, esp. on a widebody. I love that sooo much  Smile

SEA nw DC10--

Aw, come on... sure I am. Just with anything, I prefer better service and COMFORT (above all things, of course)-- yeah, yeah, watching the flaps, ailerons, and spoilers during approach and landing is fun and all, but I can enjoy aviation many other ways than suffering through economy class.  Big grin

Ahhhh 12A/J on a UA DC10-10 !!! Those engines screaming on takeoff, and did you ever study the inboard set of slats? Theres a small piece just next to the engine that pivots down and the slats slide over it, rather interesting to watch...RY

You should have found an empty Y class seat near the wing for takeoff and then moved to your wide J class seat afterwards.

Only the best for you, huh, Alaska739?
Out of the 50 times I've flown, 48 of them I sat behind a noisy engine and saw how it worked. It's fun at first, but after a while, I wish I was up front where it is quiet. And I'd take first class over coach anyday. But I could never afford first class, so if I want to sit up front, I have to fly Southwest and show up at the airport early.

Alaska739, it's what you pay for. I prefer coach. I like it and not rather pay $1000-$2000 on first class just for service or comfort on domestic flights. Coach is fine by me, as I am 5'8" I think it is very confortable. I prefer sitting behind the wings to see all the action e.i wing flap, spoilers, airbrakes, ailerons, etc. It is never boring then looking at the engines or wing while on approach.

Hel, I always buy food and take it with me on airplanes. Same as first class. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

On US airlines anyway, most of the time all you get in First class is a bigger seat. Food on shorter runs has been dropped.

If you fly enough, you wont have to pay any money for a trip in first class. It is called elite status, and with airlines like Continental, Northwest, and America West having free unlimited upgrades, it is quite easy to get 1st class....

Other frequent flyer programs make you use certificates or cash in miles for a ride up front which I would much rather take then in back with all the cattle.  Smile

Taking a view of the wing over food? It looks as though we have alot of winglovers here. If that be the case, might I suggest Hooters, where you get the best of the best of both worlds.  Smile

Never booked a flight based on meal service, I mean if I want a Steak I'll go to Outback or something similar not call United.....Gives new meaning to calling ahead for reservations I gather.....Ry

PS JMC1975 I love the concept!

I've only been in business class once (not First yet!) and it was a little boring, although the food, service and space was nice. This was only a 1 hour flight though. If it was was long haul then I would like it more because there wouldn't be so much wing activity, and I would be more grateful for the extra room!

Embarrassment Sitting in a seat alongside the wing in my first long-haul trip on a B747 at night, my friend and I were a bit perplexed at this star that never moved, or light that seemed to be always appearing at our side out in the distance. Then some hours later we realised .. it was the tip of the wing!! Still had a lot to learn about big jets, a whole new experience!
