Politics Shattered AirNZ

Mon Apr 15, 2002 2:49 pm

As this article comes from a NZ news source it is
well worth the read as to the reason the whole mess
happened in the first place. Just 2 paragraphs from this
interesting article from the land of the long white cloud.

Direct from NZ........15/4/02

"The collapse of Air New Zealand was the fault of the government and its politics. That is the only and stark conclusion to draw from the raft of documents released by the government last week."

"Simply, Clark and Cullen are blinkered by their political prejudices. Worse, Air NZ is not an isolated incident. Their cold-shouldering of the recent Boston Consulting Group report on foreign direct investment suggests they are deeply uncomfortable with the concept of using overseas capital to build the New Zealand economy."

Ooh no!!
It was all Air New Zealands own fault.
A certain member said so on another thread and he "speaks the truth and will always speak the truth".
That's what he said!!

Yeah, I read that article earlier today.
Nothing in it surprises me.
This is just another example of our Socialist Government imposing its isolationist policies upon us therefore making us look like clowns to the international community.
We all know what the other major example is.........
they used to fly Skyhawks!
What pisses me off the most is that I voted for the pricks!

Well I hope not Duff; it's election year here!
But then again, it's a funny thing when it comes to elections.
People never seem to learn.

What I find amazing is that people seem to only knock NZ (yes, it deserves a good slap in the face), but fail to consider the fault of government in this incident.

Only months before the collapse of AN were we all complaining and discussing about the procrastination of the NZ government in regards to allowing SQ take a larger stake in AirNZ and provide a capital injection.

Australia's "Minister for Qantas" John Anderson went to NZ to lobby Cullen, Clark, et al over allowing QF to take a stake, further delaying any moves. You could even add QF. QF did present misleading material to the AU government claiming (according to a report on GTV 9's Sunday) that AN wasn't in any real trouble a month or so prior to its collapse.

There are so many stakeholders in AN's collapse. Really, to only put it all at the feet of NZ is very simplistic.

The article merely reinforces something I've known for a long time. Ansett didn't need to collapse. While I'm at it, the notion that Australia cannot support three carriers is crap as well. Ansett didn't die because the market was too small, it was simply overencumbered for its marketshare & not particularly well managed.

Jesus Skystar,
That's the point I've been trying to put across for months only to come up against fierce opposition from those who saw only Air NZ as the villain and not the Aussie or NZ Govts or anyone else for that matter.
