AeroMexico Goes Boeing

Tue Apr 16, 2002 7:38 am

After almost 30 years in service, AeroMexico has learned that no DC-9 lasts forever and decided to officially start the short-haul fleet renewal. These plans were delayed due to last year´s events that hit the entire airline industry.
The first planes will start arriving later these year and one of the strongest reasons for the substituition is to make the airline more appealing to investors for the sell of Grupo AeroMexico.
The new airplanes will be either 717 or next generation 737, the decition will be announced shortly.
There are strong roumors about the airline also replacing the older MD-80s with NG jets and to increase seat offer by leasing some 777s for their European routes.

Another chaper added to the AeroMexico-717/777 rumor mill. I'll believe it when the order's final. Still, it is finally some good news from Boeing- it seems like Airbus has won the majority of the 'big' (ie- high profile) orders this year.

When will the new order will be made, they have been saying that for years, and why do they want to replace their MD-80 fleet since they have been adding more and more of this aircrarfts.
For the DC-9 I will go for the 717-200

English?? Somehow I'm thinking that English isn't your first language

Nubarrones on the Comce by the designation of Carlos Rojas; the Government reprobates it and Fox would not give possession

Throughout his administration President Vicente Fox has had to battle in several fronts. The main one, an opposition that insists on closing the passage to him to all initiative that presents/displays.

There he is the Council in PEMEX, the Fiscal Reformation, the Electrical Reformation, the new airport, the Law of Telecommunications, et cetera. The PRI that leads Roberto now Madrazo and the PRD of Robles Rosary, is the opponents to win.

But it seems that the enemies of Fox not only are in the opposition: also in its own party the BREAD, that Luis heads Brave Felipe Mena. Groups as the one of Diego Fernandez de Cevallos and Felipe Calderón brings their own agenda.

But also in the first circle of Fox problems are observed. In the friendly plan they emphasize three cases: the spacing of the industralists Alfonso Romo and Jose Luis González, and the exit of Carlos Rojas after the scandal of the towels.

Indeed this last one can be turned into a stone in the shoe of the guanajuatense. And it is that you know that as soon as the 9 of last April was elect as new president of the Mexican Council of Foreign trade, the Comce.

And it is that to the interior of the Cabinet those that assume take care of the president fell in accounts of the serious error that meant that designation. The arrival of Red to the Comce puts in an evident conflict of interest to Fox.

The risk is run for the first time of which the President does not attend the taking of possession in that cupola of cupolas of the foreign trade. Those of the Comce want that it is in a breakfast, but Presidency will do until the impossible thing to remove the return to them.

In the Coordination of Public Policies, that Eduardo Sojo takes, and the Secretariat of Economy, in charge of Luis Ernesto Derbez, there is annoyance with those who handle the destinies of the Comce, since they did not take care of his suggestion.

He alerted himself to them that the candidacy of Red was not most lucky, than would make difficult the relation of the Executive with the exporting sector and import, that would be seen the advice like one more a dependency and than there would be interest conflict.

Nevertheless, industralists like Claudius X. González, Antonio Madero Bracho and the own Federico Sada, the salient president, lent deaf ears to the recommendation. And the problem already is around the corner.

The people of Fox do not know how to decline the invitation to the possession taking and are conscious that the next international tours to promote investment will be uncomfortable by the necessary coexistence of the President and its " friend ".

There is one who says that a change of direction would not be remote and that the best thing is than Red it passes mail to another candidate. But prospectos are not seen. As much Gilberto Marín as Miguel Jáuregui was stopped.

Diego wins to the SHCP

Other that one insists on causing conflicts to the President is the panista Diego Fernandez de Cevallos. Independently of the mess in which he put to Fox by the cancellation from his trip to the United States and Canada, the senator has in check to the Secretariats of the Agrarian Reformation and Property. He happens that as already him we had platicado something here, the Fernandez de Cevallos and the ex- Solicitor and also blanquiazul Antonio Lozano Gracia, were associated in an office of lawyers. Both have been dedicated to buy litigious earth rights expropiadas by the dependency in charge of Maria Teresa Herrera. Right now they finish gaining a judgment by estates in the State of Mexico in a zone that apparently is known like Santa Ursula. The surprising thing is that the own federal Government is going to have to pay near 100 million dollars. They assure to us that Francisco Gil Diaz already has ready the check, with which will be the second time that this civil employee loses a case with the " Head Diego ", if the subject of the return of taxes to Juice of the Valley remembers.

Aeroméxico with Boeing

The one that it finishes returning from Seattle is Alfonso Pasquel. Aeroméxico already decided on the Boeing in which it will be the renovation of 15 DC-9 airplanes. The line directed by Arturo Barahona will in the last initiate the quarterly substitution of this year and will conclude in December of the 2004. Pasquel entrevistó with the directors of Boeing, that Philip M. Condit presides over. The options that the 737 Aeroméxico has are new the 717 or new generation. With it one practically discards to Airbus, that commands, Nöel Forgead, and that had made an excellent work of conviction.

And Banorte with Generali

Other that already decided was Banorte. We hardly said Friday to him that passing the Convention Banking of Cancún the pupilos of Othón Ruiz Montemayor would travel to Italy, but more than to cancel the contract with Generali, they will renew it. That extended that it was not arrived at anything with the Dutch from Aegon, that represents James Beardwolth here, which puts in doubt its permanence in Mexico because it seems that also they left bids up it by Insuring Hidalgo, directs the Faustus Alzati. So it considers to the Italians commanded by Gian Franco Gutti already.

Television Aztec and goes

He thinks myself that in a pair of months or before he could be left the Television adjustment between and Aztec Television ready, respect to the payment to transmit by the system SKY, that directs Cristóbal Rugama, the signals of channels 13 and 7. The Saline people of Ricardo Sheet not yet put in agreement with those of Emilio Azcárraga Jean in the price by subscriber, who surely will be very under the 1,48 dollars that they tried in principle. Those that yes is very annoying are those of DirecTV, that commands Robert Mountain range, because they cannot force Television that it sells his signals to them.

Venevisión is stopped

Indeed, Javier Moreno Valle has given by fact with some suppliers his entrance to Cuernavaca, with object of which they finance the purchase to him of some equipment. The version disclosed the week last in Fertile valleys, during an annual meeting of television stations. The one of CNI asked for to the SCT of Pedro Cerisola an extension of the channel to cover the zone with Tlalpan, although its objective is to take the signal until Morelos. By the way that the negotiations so that Venevisión, of Gustavo Cisneros, bought a participation of the 40 were cancelled.

Hard Felguera constructs

Hard Felguera paid around 1 million dollars by the 51 percent of Pycorsa Engineering, this company that was of the family Rodriguez Miaja. The idea is that the founders leave in a term of 5 years, behind which the Spaniards exert the option of the 21 rest. Diavaz, the one of Luis Vázquez, has the other 29 percent. Hard Felguera right now invests to 75 million dollars in a vinyl chloride plant for the refinery of Pajaritos property of PEMEX. Pycorsa counts on a plant superior to the 150 engineers.

Milano against the wall

It is probable that today Merbo Comercializadora, that directs Manuel Merino makes one cobranza open in some newspapers to Milano and summons at the same time to all the suppliers that not yet that chain pays to them that handles Natan Opalín to that they join his cause. As we informed the last week to him, Milano owes to Merbo 1,2 million weights. Merino already made arrive at Grupo Saba copies of the demand. Nevertheless it seems that the administration of Opalín made up the numbers to him to Isaac Saba, interested in buying as much, like a Newbridge, that sells.

They adjudge Aristos of the DF

With the new development of which Banorte, that directs Federico Valenzuela, finishes adjudging the Aristos hotel of the City of Mexico. The building occurred like dación in payment by an old debit contraido with Bancen, the institution that era of Hugo Villa and whose portfolio and assets the followers of Roberto absorbed González Barrera. The Aristos partnership belongs to Jose Abed and is conformed by other hotels whose majorities are not property of this poblano industralist.

The MD-80 replacement rumours are not for sure. That´s why they call them rumours. You do have to admit that some of AeroMexico´s MDs are over 20 years old and like I´ve said before: nothing lasts forever.
The order will happen shortly because they have to get rid of the DC-9s due to the Mexican law that won´t allow these planes to fly over the country´s airspace starting 2004.

Of Course, AeroMexico will order Boeing, the plane is perfect for the airline, in accord with its Boeing 757 and 767 and for its market. In my opinion the best option is the 737-800 or 737-900.

Maybe they'll get MD-90s and more M87s? Lots of M87s will be available from SK, AY and IB and they are not that old. M87s also have about same capaicty as DC-9-30s. I'm also sure Boeing could have to get rid of all of those AA/TW 717s and I'm sure AM could get a good deal. Would like to see AM 777 and I think that may happen thru leasing company. We will see. I won't believe it either until I see the first new 737 or 717 in Mexico City's airport, but anyway, I do think it's gonna happen this time. The DC-9 replacement must begin ASAP.

Personally, I want to see the 717 flying in the DC-9's place, and the 737NG when the first MD-80s are retired. And we all agree we can't wait to see an AeroMexico 777.

That would be my perfect AMX fleet: 717, 737NG, 757, 767, 777), and for MXA: A318, 319, 320, 757, A330. (Basically, just the way they will be when they retire all F100s and 727s, plus the 318 and the 330).

As Aeromexico tends to utilize it's aircraft on various stage lengths and PAX capacities, I doubt the 717 will be part of any future order. A great airplane but the 737-700 would be much more versatile.
As much as it grieves me to say, I think a better choice would be the A319/A320. The A319 is slightly more suited to the 200 mile routes than the 73G. Well, as has been pointed out, this is all pure speculation.

By the way, I do not mean to imply that the Airbus is inferior to the Boeing, I just prefer Boeings for sentimental reasons.

Here is a more "human" translation of the note for you non-spanish speaking fellows:

Aeromexico goes Boeing

One that has just come from Seattle is Alfonso Pasquel (Aeromexico CEO). Aeromexico has already decided for Boeing to replace 15 of its DC-9. The airline leadered by Arturo Barahona will begin the replacement in the last quarter of this year and will end by december 2004. Pasquel had meetings with Boeing management, leadered by Philip M. Condit. The options that Aeromexico has are the new 717 or the 737 Next Generation. With this Airbus gets practically discarded. (Leadered by Noël Foregad, who had been doing an excellent convincing task)

I now AeroMexico is waiting for a total of 25 new acft.

Aircraft in replacement:

DC9s in replacement:

MD82s in replacement:

15 DC9s + 10 MD82s give a total of the 25 aircraft waiting for.

15 - 717s
10 - B737-8

And maybe more MD-87 to come!

I have a question then if AMX is going to remplace the MD82 for B737NG why is he bringing 2 new MD88 N214AM and N216AM???.

As we are talking about the remplacement i would say that the B171-200 is the perfect aircraft for sustitude of the DC9-32 that AM operates, and don't talk about the B737NG pernonaly i thing they are going to bring B737-800, and well about the 777 woahhhhh!!!
IT would be asom to see them!

It's stupid to replace DC-9s with MD-87s when the MD-87 has the *same* operating costs as an MD-82/83/88

same engines, same # of crew, only diff is a bit better fuel burn and that's not significant enough to offset considering the MD82/3/8 series.

If plans are to renew the fleet they will probably go with the 737, I first wanted to see 717's on Aeromexico's fleet but if they start to change their MD's most probably we will see an entire boeing fleet with 737s 757s 767s and probably with one or two 777's, I just really hope that renewal could be reflected on their fares .

I think that their MD's can give more years of good service. If plans are not to renew fleet maybe they are just looking how to maintain those MD's until the end like they did with the DC9.

What are they going to do with their DC9? are they going to Aerocalifornia or Aerocaribe?

Again, It is great to know that mexican airlines are doing their job, but I still think the government has to sell them ASAP.
