LH Executive: Star Alliance Hopes Air China Joins

Tue Apr 16, 2002 8:58 am

(not an article)

Air China will probably join the Star Alliance - The Airline Network For Earth, LH VP Asia Pacific Manfred Reimer said today, 'I'm very hopeful that Air China will become a member of Star Alliance.'

All the members of the Star Alliance meet in Shanghai next month and an announcement could be made then.

LH said that airlines are expanding operations in China as it is expected to be the biggest growing market this decade.

LH and CA have been selling eachother's tickets on selected flights since October 2000 and they have a joint venture engineering company.

'There has been no firm decision on whether Air China will join Star Alliance,' said Air China spokesman Clara So. 'Ultimately, the final decision is Air China's.'

At SFO, the Air China planes are now parking at the Star Alliance terminal.

Also, a few months back long before 9/11, UA pulled the SFO-PEK nonstop flight, and leaving the route solely operated by Air China, which would be unusual for such a major route, unless they planned to codeshare on it or something.

Interesting signs...

Question: Do Star Alliance members have to meet certain standards in safety, customer service, amenities, comfort of cabin? Are their any "expectations" and if so, does Air China compare to say a Singapore and thus is eligable for Star Alliance?

Awesome pre-news!
Can´t wait for the next step! Would that be the Middle-East? Africa? Or maybe India?  Smile

Is there any chance of having another North American carrier joinning Star Alliance, like America West or US Airways?

Cheers!

If this happens I will be a little surprized because Air China has reletively close reletionship with Northwest, but other partners of theirs have joined other alliances before so I guess that this could happen. We will see.

well, i do hope they´ll join. if there will be additional star members they should be serving regions of major growth such as china or india.

yes, there are certain criterias a star member must meet before they may join. i do not have specific details, but that´s been mentioned repeatedly. that´s a reason why it takes some time for certain airline to join.
when CA entered into the c/s agreement with LH, LH´s CEO already mentioned the possibility of CA joining star, but pointed out that would take some time since CA had to improve in some respects, service, and whatever...

i highly doubt there will be an additional US carrier to join star. the story would have been different if US had been acquired by UAL, or if they have entered into a major cooperation.

cheers

China is one of the few markets not yet served properly by Star. The question is not if a Chinese airline will join Star, rather which one. Since CA already is code-sharing with LH, they seem to be closest, atleast right now, but things might change.

ANA has just recently entered into codeshare agreements with two secondary chinese airlines. which airlines exactly has slipped my mind, but it´s definitively not CA.
i´m not sure, perhaps that´s the two carriers which will be merged with CA so in the end there´d be no difference. but if not, ANA ending up with three chinese carriers???

Johnnybgoode,

I deeply regret for not matching the topic now, but I would really like to know a bit more the MBA program in Aviation Management you are studying. I tried to find your e-mail, but it was disclosed. If possible, please contact me at ciro.camargo@uol.com.br

My apologies for the posting.

United eliminated SFO-PEK 744 service in favor of ORD-PEK 777 service so as to combat American's potential entry into the market thru China Southern.

There is no such thing as a Star Alliance Terminal in SFO. That is the international terminal... that's why you saw Air CHina there. NW parks there for the NRT flight too.

Seems a little mixed up here... NW and Air CHina already have extensive codesharing. But KL codeshares with China Eastern (?) or is it CHina SOuthern? Maybe NW and Air China can part ways mutually and Air CHina can go to Start and NW can link up in association with KL and their partner. Kinda only makes sense for the logistical aspect...

Seems like NW and Airchina are a lot closer than Star. AZ's right. THere is not Star terminal at SFO. Ive seen NW there as well as KL and lots of others.
Maybe KL would break for Air CHina instead of NW. Whatever happened to malaysia?

ANA recently signed MoU with Shanghai Airlines and China Southwest Airlines for cooperation. Interestingly, both Shanghai Airlines and China Southwest Airlines has ties with Air China, and they're set to be merged under Air China's title.

Actually, there is a veritable "Star Alliance" terminal at SFO's new IT.

I work there. I should know.

All *alliance carriers into SFO (UA, LH, MX, SQ, NH) operate out of the UA dominated and governed concourse G.

NW and most other operate out of A.

The only oddballs in the G concourse are EVA Air, Aeroflot, and Air China.
