I GOT Hired!

Wed Apr 17, 2002 4:08 am

Just returned from Hamburg!
Had my final assesment center for Lufthansa City Line!
I made it! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not clear whether I'll fly the RJ85 or the CRJ will know it tomorrow!
This feeling is incredible after 18month of hard work I finally made it to my Dream Job!
I'm so happy about it that I want you all to know it.

Congratulations SQ325, well done.

As a pilot in training I know how difficult it can be to get there. I wish you good luck with your type rating and wish you and your passengers many safe landings. I am know with Bae systems flight training and have just got my exam results of my first set of JAR exams. I passed them all, also for me a big step forward. Maybe in the future I will be sitting next to you. I know that some dutch pilots already working for cityline are very possitive about their employer. So it seems that there are good times ahead.

Cheers,

SQ325 Congrats.

For those of us over here, I would be interested in how your interview flowed. For regionals in the USA, this is how it generally works:

1. 50 question multiple choice test. All IFR/Commercial test bank questions. Must score 80%. While you are taking the test, your logbooks are being screened.

2. Interview. Mixture of HR/Ops personnel. Several questions that pertain to "what would you do if...?", "what is your biggest weakness?". Many technical questions that pertain to FARs, approach plates, systems.

3. Simulator. different profiles and standards, but always VOR holds, holding entries.

Tell us your experience in detail. Would be very interested!

Congradulations my friend,I wish you best of luck in your new life.You'll now see although it looks the hardest times are past because you made to the right seat but actually the truth is its just now starting.You'll be facing very hard working,memorising,exhausting study times.When I started my airline career 16 months ago some instroctor told me that I would consider the next two years as never lived(which means I woulnt expect anything from my social life,going to cinema,hangin out as I used to be)but STUDY every single free time I have apart from flying and sleeping.This might be sound like too much or exaguarted but the truth is your airline career gooes all the way how its starts.What I mean if you make a good name like hard working,always studying,always trying to learn something the experienced people will give something to you.What I mean is In a typical flight you'll sit next to a 50 year old captain youll have nothing in common to talk(I am 29 BTW)youll keep flying doing nothing except the necessary talk,and at the end of the day say have nice day,goodbye.When you look back after the flight you see"OK I "did my job but this flight didnt add anything to my knowledge but some hour to my logbook"What I recomend you dont waste any ofthese times,suck the knowledge and experience out of these captains brains.During the cruise dont sit and drink coffee all the time but play with the FMC,create way points,set up alternate approaches,ask him to listen to you to brief an NDB approach,make a passenger announce to him,read jeppesen.And one more thing,never take anybodys word as exactly correct especially in the technical knowledge.The only exact true knowledge is in your aircraft volumes.Always check from books before memorisng someone said because he might be wrong somethimes.
Well I dont want to bore you from the first day,you just have fun of your great success,feel free to contact me to see you are not the only one gets exhausted about studying.I am a frequent visitor of German airports maybe we'll vawe each other somewhere on the pre take off line ups.Good luck again.

Best of luck and I hope that you get the plane you want. Do you have a preference? Maybe some day (many years from now) I'll join you in the skies.

Btw, what happened at JNB between LY and LH? Did someone say something Anti-Nazi, or anti-semetic?

@ Clipperhawaii
My first flight lesson was on 14th sep 2000 now I'll fly the RJ85! Total experience 250hrs.

@ILS
Most likely I'll be on the AVRO. I hope for Frankfurt but they told me that maybe I need to go to Dusseldorf.

@Avion
Direct entry!

@Cx_flyboy
No!

@Racko
I don't know.

@TT737FO
Lufthansa and Luftansa City Line selection are the same. First test is similar to what you described. tech questions,math and english. Aditional you have a lot of reaction and multible stresstests. This one is one day. Know the selection process starts. This test is a really tough one.
Second part is a Sim check, for me on the CRJ700 sim. Basic IFR a bit of Air Work.
Third part is assesment center. It is 2 days long and they test your behaviour in group situations. A discussion with a unsatisfied pasenger, one group game with three other guys and another stress test where you have to work with a partner and find a solution for different problems.
Thats the first day. Some need to leave after the first day. Second day only the interview. two captains and two psychlogists askes me about family, school, flight training, girl friend and many other things. After that you'll be hired or not. I GOT

Thanks Bjoern for the information. I am just curious though, do you think you have the "experience and confidance to be a First Officer? When I had 250 hours of flight time I thought I was capable but now at over 1000 hours I look back on my early flying as a bit more of an extention of the learning process.
When I received my instrument rating at 160 hours,my examiner said that now I have a "ticket" to "learn how to fly on instruments." He was so right! There is only one thing worse than a low time pilot and that is a high time Captain who has to baby sit.

Where did you do all of your training? And do you think "ab initio" works?

i did my flight training @ a flight school in Mannheim/Germany. From my point of view the ab initio training works.
I'm 23 got a great job with a fantastic airline. The point is that i don't see a big difference in flying PA28 250 or 1250 hours. Flying the big ones is a different thing. To learn the procedures and mechanical things 250hrs plus classroom training are enough.
