Liat -> RJs?

Wed Apr 17, 2002 4:57 am

Justplanes reports that LIAT is looking on the aquisition of two regional jets with a capacity of 50-70 seats. If true it sounds like an order for the CRJ200/700 given their large Dash 8-Q100/300 fleet (10 frames IIRC). Anyone having additional info?

Interesting idea - hopefully it would work for them. The jets would be most viable for the major trunk routes LI flies (ANU-BGI-POS) and of course would enable it to extend services to the other islands mentioned. All the same, LI previously flew to the Dominican Republic but stopped about 1-2 years ago -I do not know why but if they see viability in the operation it may make sense to resume. Why they flew to - and plan to return to - Santiago rather then Santo Domingo is also interesting to find out. They did the Santiago leg in the past as a tie-up with Dominair but as for now, perhaps brand recognition.

Extension to Jamaica seems reasonable given the fact that Jamaica is a LIAT shareholder but has never had service from it. Alas, the travel market between Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean is relatively small and easily saturated, as Air Jamaica found out at great expense 2 years ago when it tried to take on BWIA on KIN-POS. Not to mention that JM plans a return to ANU later this year, 6 years after it first tried (and withdrew).

All the same, a positive development and the RJs should make LI more competitve overall, especially given the rapid expansion of rivals Caribbean Star and the outside possibility that American Eagle could also try RJ services in the region in a head to head battle. Also, do not forget that Pan Am is expanding its Caribbean services too, from SJU.

Tritocan Pan Am is indeed expanding in the caribbean but from Santo Domngo in the DR and it will be under the Pan American World Airways name- it will be subsidary. In CaribbeanAvenue the Liat marketing director said they want to expand into the Dominican market because they want to market LIAT to the large community of Dominican nationals in St. Marteen, Puerto Rico, Antigua and the BVI. In my opinion the Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic market is getting saturated and if LIAT tries to step in they will recieve fierce competition from a couple of airlines.
