South African's European Expansion

Wed Apr 17, 2002 1:25 pm

SAA announced that they will inaugurate nonstop service from Johannesburg to Milan Malpensa on 02Jul02.

Schedules as follows :
SA242 JNB 2040-0630 MXP (Dep JNB Tue/Thu/Sun)
SA243 MXP 1930-0520 JNB (Dep MXP Mon/Wed/Fri)
Flights will be operated with a Boeing 747SP.

Copenhagen service starts 02Oct02:
SA252 JNB 1950-0720 CPH (Dep JNB Tue/Thu/Sat)
SA253 CPH 2030-0800 JNB (Dep CPH Wed/Fri/Sun)
Flights will be operated with a Boeing 747SP.

It seems that SAA is eager to expand its network into Europe, and I'm wondering if they will ever return to Amsterdam or initiate nonstop service to Paris as opposed to routing the flights through Zurich

Also, it seems odd to me that they would deploy 747SP's to Europe. Does this mean they will no longer be used to Asia? It makes more sense to utilize the more efficient 767's on such low density markets, as well as try to stay clear of all of the new EU abatement regulations that are set to come into effect.

They're making wild profits after moving the MIA flight to ATL.

That is exactly I do remember used fly into MIA with an old codeshare by American Airlines by 3 years and it was no longer use as for codeshare and now, them Delta will have it as for codeshare and hopefully, that will be join as for skyteam alliance and I am looking forward to see them with Alitalia, AeroMexico, Air France, CSA Czech Airlines, Korean Air and Delta Air Lines too. Hopefully, will be do that as for the future. Well, see ya!!

The B747SP's will only be used on the European routes temporalily, until the A340's arrive. You can expect to see all of SAA's B747Classics retired by the end of 2003.

Exusair, they made wild profits with thier MIA flights too. Only difference was MIA had less feed, but made it up for it with huge O&D numbers.

Just to clarify, as long as DL and SAA retain thier partnership, I don't think SAA should ever leave ATL. However, with the extra A340s they are getting, I do think they could be succsesful with a thrice weekly MIA or FLL flight on a 343 or 346. They flew to FLL up to 9.11, but new immigration rules ended that for now. SAA will be back once the rules are softened again.
