2 Holers, Boring And All Look The Same

Sat Apr 20, 2002 9:41 pm

is it just me or the fact that all of the new airliners pretty much look the same ( except for size and a few other small cosmetic effects ). its making the airways and airports boring. what do you think?

agree, with small exceptions in the regional/commuter sector

I disagree. That's just my opinion. All planes have their own unique look...

They all look the same? Hold on a minute but, when did the A340 resemble a 777 and how does a 767 look the same as an A330? or a 757 look like an A320?

I disagree as well.

Now, the one-holers...to me are boring!

I don't think they are boring. But I do agree his understanding. The variety of a/c designs has dwindled considerably over the years.

I agree. Its especially hard for me to study the Airbus narrow body designs where I live because they are so rare: DFW / DAL.

kind regards,

Maybe aircraft manufacturers have found the ideal shape for an aircraft to fly economically, which probably explains why they look similar then? Just wondering.

ok, im not saying an A340 looks like a 777 ( it has 4 engines and a 777 has two for starts ) how ever most of if not all new aircraft look so remarkably the same ( and im not argueing the fact it may be for economic reasons ) that it makes aircraft spotting and Id'ing boring. ( even when we are in flight, we always talk about it,pilot: " hey eng what plane is that at co altitude" eng:"hmmm its hard to tell they all look alike now adays " copilot: " yeah, you got to get really close to even tell if its a boeing or airbus")

Yeah i understand your point. But they all look the same maybe because manufacturers have found a reasonable design which they like and is economical as Airbus_A340 mentioned. That could be the reason although i cant really see how airbus or boeing could come up with a design which is drastically different to current planes we have now. They've probably looked at all the different designs.

When boeing was designing the 777, they thought about having an upper deck with 3 engines, but that obviously never happened.

I immediately recognise a 330 from a 757/767 because of the winglets.
I think it's hard to distinguish a 757 from a 767.

IMO it is hard to tell if it if a 757 or a A321 especially when airborne. I always have to look twice to see if it a LTU A321 or a 757 @ DUS.

Back to the topic:
Luckily the sonic cruiser will change that!

I agree with you 100% Galaxy5, spotting airliners is boring these days.

Bring back the days of the classic 747s, DC-10s, CV990s, DC-8s, Comets, L1011s, 727s, etc. Now those were the days to go spotting (even though I wasn't alive then!  Big thumbs up)

I tell you what, we'll do a deal. I'll phone up Airbus and you phone Boeing, we'll tell them that their airplanes are boring and too similar and we'd like them to redesign all their best selling aircraft so they look more interesting and less alike...

galaxy5,
you bring up a good point, but i disagree.

to see a 777 taxi to the gate next to a 737 is awesome, to see a 757 landing gives you the chills. planes all have the same general look, but i feel there is enough diffrence to help each plane stand out.

like they said before, when was the last time you saw a 757 and said what kind of plane is that? when was the last time you saw a 777 and said man that 737 is huge?

i like the planes, but i am a big fan of the 727, but now we have the 777 to help ease the pain.

Ual777contrail is correct.

You cannot mistake a 777 for a 737 or a 767. the 777 is just so massive and stylish-looking.

757 has a unique nose design, looks the head of a cobra snake, you cant really mistake that for another plane.

A330/A340 should be easy to spot since they have winglets, only other plane to have winglets is the 747 and MD-11, MD-11 has 3 engines though.

I have no trouble distinguishing planes from on another, only high up in altitude i might do.
