AA Bringing Back SJC-CDG And Tpe?

Sun Apr 21, 2002 1:01 pm

Our J-line on gate 7 was just modified to accomidate the 777 and 767-300. I hear that AA is bringing back the SJC-CDG and SJC-TPE...is this true? If so, when? What are the plans for gates to be used?

In a word, no.

The market is not there. Silicon Valley has lost its luster, Asia has not quite recovered, and AA can't even do double daily DFW-CDG. SJC-CDG/TPE is won't happen in the near future. Maybe a couple years from now... that terminal was necessary, however, for the MX flight, and AA Tokyo flight.

I think AA might be able to do a SJC-LGW flight if it can beef up it's domestic operation at SJC. Keep in mind they already have an LAX-LHR flight with a 777.

AA has a "focus city" at SJC and I don't think it can support a flight to europe unless there is more of a domestic operation at SJC in order to support it. However, AA already has the LAX-LHR flight so an SJC-LGW flight would probably lose out as LAX is not that much farther away, and there is a real market there. Not only that, but to an extent, you might have DFW to deal with too. In a sense, DFW probably gets a lot of AA connections to London from the mid-west/south-west area and it kind of competes with SJC.

So my deal is:
-Beef up domestic operation
-Wait for market to get better
-Convince NRT pax that connecting in SJC from Tokyo to London is worth a try.

Asking a London-bound passenger from Tokyo to connect at SJC? You are kidding me, aren't you? The great circle distance between the cities you mentioned are:

NRT-SJC 5154 mi
SJC-LGW 5393 mi
NRT-LGW 5987 mi

Traveling 10547 mi instead of 5987 mi. I don't think anyone would do that even on a heavily discounted fare.

SJCCDG and SJCTPE are gone for good. SJCCDG never performed all that well. Althought SJCTPE did usually run full, the yields were extremely low and due to political reasons I doubt AA will ever return to Taiwan.
SJCLHR is at the top of our wish list, and if a open skies is ever reached with UK AA would move the LAXLHR route to SJC.

Deltaflyer- Somebody I guess can't take a joke. Who would have the sense to actually try that?  Yeah sure

AA777flyer- Just out of curiosity, what are the odds of AA starting an SJC-HKG Cathay Pacific codeshare?

And AA's got a codeshare with EVA on the SFO-TPE line -- I agree, SJC-TPE is probably dead for now.

Of course, I'd love to see more at SJC, since it's only 3 miles from my place!

Since Swiss pulled the SFO-ZRH flight and AA is now a partner of Swiss with codeshares why not start SJC-ZRH and work on connecting traffic rather than O and D
They have An SFO-ZRH direct thru. Dallas (flight 38) but why not do it SJC-ZRH n/s. The market may not be there but think about the connection possibilities. AA has little service from n. California to Euopre.\

Yes this is just another crazy dream of mine.

Funny, there has been no mention of the fact that new FIS capable gates are being built at SJC to replace the shack.

AluminumShower- Just because the airport has the capabilities, does not mean the market is there. For example, everybody is saying how the new international terminal at DFW will bring DFW many more international flights. I'd doubt it if brought much more than 5 additional flights from Mexico or Canada, and those being operated by American. True, DFW needs it. Terminal B's 3 longhaul capable gates can get crowded) and Terminal A is facing congestion from the AA widebodies, but all in all, Terminal D(new intl terminal) will not bring exotic airlines from around the world. The terminal could handle it, but there is no market(assuming this terminal would open tomorrow). In 2005, DFW may be a lot larger, but the point is, just because the facilities are there, does not mean the market is there.

The point is, SJC might get a few extra flights, but nothing major other than a stronger committment from AA for NRT services.

The new FIS at SJC is long overdue. The shack (Actually a modular building not unlike those used by schools and construction companies) is too small and far away from the terminal for even the few international flights it serves. I heard the new building will operate with 2 gates.

AA and MX flights will be better served when the new FIS opens in the fall. I was at SJC on Thursday and it looked from the outside like it is on track.

Here are some details from a couple of years ago.

Um.... I think you read into my post just a little too much, blink. I wasn't even refering to an increase of international service, but thanks for telling me what I already know.
