New Zealand Airforce Buying 757

Mon Apr 22, 2002 1:16 pm

My brother worked for the Airforce as an aircraft technician until he got laid off because of the BITCH (Helen Clark). He now works for Air New Zealand and he told me that the New Zealand Airforce is going to sell the 727's and buy a 757. Is this true and if so when will this be.

I can't remember the exact details in an article I read but it did mention that they were looking at purchasing some 757's or A320's. Who knows when though!

Haven't heard about this but I would think the 757 would be the better buy over the Airbus due to its range, capacity and commonality with the 767 as Air New Zealand would most likely be contracted for major maintenance.
In my opinion, the 727s were a terrible choice mainly due to their range limitations; most I think are unaware that these aircraft fly as far afield as the US and the UK quite often.
But then, with Auntie-Helen-knows-best in charge, they'll probably end up buying ex-Chinese Tridents.

I have a family member still in the force and apparently, following September 11th last year there was serious discussion about buying the 757. At the time, because of the cheap prices, the airforce was able to afford 3 as opposed to 2. It is more likely over the 737 because of its cargo capacity and potential as a troop transport.

And keep in mind that there is a conversion for a cargo door for the main deck on the 757. I don't think anybody has engineered one for the A-320 yet.

Got to agree with the thoughts on the range bennies of the 57 over the 27.

If they get the 757 can't wait to see them.

Will it be a 200 or a 300?

Um, one question. Why is the NZ gov getting possibly three 757's when the Australian gov (considerably larger) is getting by on 3 BBj's??

What's wrong with Helen Clark?

Maybe she's making the tough but necessary decisions to run NZ properly.

No need to call her a 'bitch'.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

QANTASforever,

The reason the RNZAF might purchase three B757 whilst the RAAF will have two BBJ is probably that the Kiwis will also use the 757 as a troop transport whilst the RAAF can call on 24 C130 (12 x H, 12 x J) 2 - 3 B707 (for a short time) with possibly the QF B762s that they are thinking of getting rid of as troop transports for the ADF.

They are just my thoughts.

I'm in the RAAF and we have all heard rumours lately from various high level sources in Canberra re the QF762s. They have said that due to the constant problems the RAAF we are having with the B707s we should shortly have a wide body capability in the ADF. Given that QF is looking at disposing of the 762s we are all guessing that they will be the birds for us. Most probably used for troop transport/cargo initially but later converted to KC767 by Boeing with both hose and droge and flying boom capability, hopefully at Boeing's Amberley facility in QLD.

I assumed the 762s would be used as either VIP transport, AWAC or tankers for inflight refuelling. It would look rather cool to see a 762 in RAAF colours, now all we need is a 747 and my ego trip will be completed. lol

The 762 will be used primarily as Tankers secondly as cargo. The RAAF is getting the B737 Wedgetail AEW aircraft in 04 with the BBJ and Challegers used for VIPs.

Hey Guys,
While i was at the Whenuiapai Airbase Openday last month, i was told by the Flight Attendants onboard the 727 that they were indeed lookign at other aircrafts, and not SHORT RANGE!!

She said that they wanted a aircraft similar to the 727...so my guess is 757!! Airbus is very different!

Cheers
Mike

PS: Did you guys see the Galley in those things?? Man, you cant even call it that! It is SOOOOOOOOOO OLD!
