2-5-2 On The 777

Tue Apr 23, 2002 1:24 pm

Hi, I was wondering what it's like to be in the bench of 5 on the 777, the 777 has pretty wide seats but where does that leave your upper body? What's it like for a longhaul flight? I.E the 12hr flight from LAX-LHR on the AA 777.

Its not that bad unless you are in the middle. I had to do the middle of 5 going to Chicago 3 weeks ago. You can read about it in my trip report titled "David goes to Deltaland"

Hey,
I sat in the middle seat from SEL-AKL on KE, and didnot find it any different to any other seat!! Not too cramped, just right, and very cosy!!

The 2-5-2 seating of the 777 in economy is the primary reason I prefer to fly the A330 on long trips in Y.

It's ok if I can get in a 2 by the window, but have been stuck in the "centre" of the 5 before and getting up when people are sleeping around you is not very nice.

The BA 3-4-3 (or is it 3-3-3?) config in the 777 is just as bad, since a window seat means you're still buried 2 seats from the aisle.

Peronal preference I suppose, but perception-wise the Airbus widebody cabin is better for me. Of course, if I had the money I would go in Business / First and choose a 777 every time... wouldn't we all?!

BA has 3-3-3, which isn't that bad. The BEST? 2-4-3. DEFINATLY.

I agree 777236ER.

Well, with the possible exception of the best widebody in the sky and it's 2-3-2 config... gotta love the 76.

777236ER - BA has a number of 777's fitted out with 3-4-3 in economy for high density 'tourist' routes, like Florida or the Caribbean - not very comfortable !!

Was flying UA 777 SFO-FRA 2-5-2 seating and that was the most horrible flight I have ever had. Seats were narrow, uncomfortable and I had a feeling that their seat pitch is also the smallest I have ever experienced (Usually flying SAS 763ER, now A340). No good words about this particular configuration.

The 3-4-3 777s are only for Carib routes, and there's only 2 of them.

The majority are 3-3-3.

But yeah, the 767 2-3-2 ROCKS.

Damn. I coulda sworn that there were 2. Ah well. Still, the majority are 3-3-3 with all 3/4 classes.

Are there any airlines that use 2-4-3?

With reference to BA's high density 777's, now that the contract with us has finished as of 31 March 2002, G-VIIO, G-VIIP, G-VIIR have all been reconfigured. They remain in two class, Club World and World Traveller. They extended the Club Cabin and made the seating in World Traveller 3-3-3.

Now why couldn't they have done that when we asked them to 3 years ago ?? Definitely much better.

I think they should use 2-5-2 but give the middle seat passengers a wider seat and/or wider arm rest and some other minor perks. That should compensate the inconvenience of being put in the middle of the 5-seat row. Is this the best of both worlds?

I like the 2-4-2 on the Airbus widebodies. Its not too bad in one of the middle seats. 2-3-2 is the best tho. It would seem like the fairest configuration for 777 coach would be 3-3-3 because 2-5-2 means you have to go over two people if youre in the middle. With 3-3-3 its just like a 737 with an extra block of seats. And we all can deal with 737's. Sorry if that doesn't make any sense, I'm sick and just took some NyQuil or something...

Even 3-3-3 isn't that bad on the A330, compared to 2-4-2 on a 767. I've also done 3-3-3 in a MON A300 and that wasn't too bad. The AIH 767-300ER was the worst, terrible leg room and terrible seat width  Sad

I hope I don't have to fly them again (in the majority of cases we can fly scheduled, but never want to fly from LHR for some crazy reason..).

I don't like the idea of 2-5-2, the 5 annoys me, I hate a row that has too many seats without an aisle. I think that 2-4-3 is the best option, unfortunetely it doesn't look that 'balanced'  Smile.

Well the 2-5-2 has been used for years without many complaints on L10's and DC-10's and M11's. Try to get you rseat early if you dread those middle seats.

I did not like being in the middle of the 2-5-2 configured United 777 on a relatively short LAX-DEN run. I can't imagine being confined like that on a 10-12 hour flight. I'd go insane.

That said, if you get the window/aisle side of a 2-5-2 configured plane, it's MUCH nicer than a 3-3-3 configured aircraft. (And I agree the 767 2-3-2 configuration is the best of the lot!)

I flew American LHR-LAX on seat an my seat was in the middle. Hmm.. I didn't like it. But the rest was ok.
3-3-3 would be better.

Ok, we have all seen on the A340 that in the bench 4 the if you are in the 2 inner-most seats you get that extra armest in the middle, so would it me possible to give ever passenger that in a configuration such as 2-5-2 or 3-3-3 so they won't feel as cramped?

It is refreshing to hear that BA has done away with the 3-4-3 on the World Traveller on the 777-200s to the Caribbean - that was the epitome of tight seating! I flew on them between Tobago and Gatwick last year and wrote all about it in a trip report. Rather a nasty seating arrangement and it was a shock when I first boarded in TAB. Not knowing what to expect, I entered and was bewildered by the sight of people everywhere!

Still a great plane, though, the 777.

Well, one good thing about sitting in the middle seat is nobody is going to try to jump over you to get to the lav!

Former Swissair and now Swiss uses 2-4-3 on their MD 11. It is the best seating with 9 seats abreast. You only have one "double excuse" seat per row. All seatings with a seat more (3-4-3 on 777/MD11 or 3-3-3 on 330/340) is horrible and cramped. I would never ever fly it. Every inch is important.

If that middle seat is anythign like the ones i used to take on AA DC-10's 6-7 years ago your not in for a fun time. If your in the bulkhead row (it was 11 on the -10's) its not so bad because you have the room to get around people. But if your in any other row its your scrwed 4 ways from sunday. 2 to the right of you 2 to the left and im stuck in the middle with no way to the bathroom! I hated it so much, haven't tried it on the 777 yet, i assume its better.
