What UAL Doing In Mobile?

Tue Apr 23, 2002 2:22 pm

I found flight tracker here it is:

Airline United
Flight Number 9863
Departure City (Airport) New York, NY (JFK)
Departure Time 04/22/2002 08:47 PM
Arrival City Mobile, AL (BFM) (Mobile Aerospace Field)
Arrival Time 04/22/2002 10:14 PM
Remaining Flight Time 00:00
Aircraft Type Boeing 767-200
Current Altitude 0 feet
Current Groundspeed 0 mph
Flight Status Arrived

Did UA have special charter flight or painting or check up?

It is not at Mobile regional Airport(MOB).

I am not certain why flight tracker showed what it did, however, if I had to guess, the United flight may have gone to Brookley field, an old former airforce base that is now used to as a cargo transport location, many birds including the 747, MD-11/DC-10 and others fly into there, for whatever reason that United flight may have flown there, ethier unscheduled/emergency stop or a special route.

UAL planes can be seen there regularly. It is not MOB. BFM is located just South of I-10 to the West of Downtown. You can actually see the tails of the planes, including UAL 747's, from the interstate. I always assumed work was being done on the aircraft there, but I don't know.

I'm a student at Mobile. UA fies their 744 often for service, repair etc. at Brookley Fields. If you notice the flight number it's not a regular no.

I've often seen UAL planes at Brookley while driving by on I-10. It's kind of neat to see UAL widebodies coming and going from a small city like Mobile.

There is no revenue service on these flights. UA Express used to serve MOB (the actual airport) with RJ flights to ORD and IAD. However, they immediately bailed out after 9/11 and it doesn't seem likely that they'll be coming back soon.
