EWR Or Phl?

Thu Apr 25, 2002 4:16 am

Being located in Princeton, New Jersey, I am approximately equidistant from both Newark and Philadelphia airports. With both airports having easy access by the train (NJ Transit to Newark, and SEPTA to Philly), I am contemplating taking a spotting trip to one of the two. I'd be interested to hear some comments on which airport is "better" for spotting from the terminal buildings before security checkpoints. Obviously, I won't have access to the gate areas as just a casual spotter. It seems pretty clear that EWR wins out over PHL for diversity of airlines and aircraft, but what airport is better for spotting purposes while not in the gate areas?

I may be a little biased about this one  Smile/happy/getting dizzy , but there is a great place to spot at EWR inside the terminal. Go to Terminal B at EWR right before the NW/Delta Security Checkpoint, this is a great area for spotting in the terminal and no one should say anything to you. You can also try places like IKEA off the airport but I am not sure about security there.

I am not sure about PHL so I dont want to say anything about that airport.

There isn't really anywhere to spot in the terminal's in Philly if you can't get through security. Infact, I can't even think of one place. Maybe down by E there are a couple windows you could look out of but you wont see much at all.

At EWR you can get some great views by simply taking the monorail between terminals.

Someone else mentioned Ikea - it's off of exit 13a of the NJ Turnpike. There's also the Jersey Gardens outlet mall. In both places you can park in the parking lot and get some great views.

At PHL you can go to the top of the parking garages and get a full view of the entire airport. Nothing is unseen. However, I think EWR might have more intersting planes, more international airlines, more planes overall. I do not know about spotting at PHL.

At PHL you can go to the top of the parking garages and get a full, total view of all airport operations! However at EWR you will see more planes, and international airlines. I do not know about spotting places at EWR.

While I havent done spotting at EWR, I have done a little bit on the rooftop garages, they are a good spot offering a full view, but have a pair of binoculars handy, and if your planning on photos, have an insanely strong lens, PHL doesnt have much variety, the one time I did spot there I was fortunate enough to catch the AF A330 landing at PHL...

You guys give PHL a bum rap. There is plenty of diversity in PHL. UPS and BA bring in 747 DL AA and US have 757's. US has A330's 321 320 319. F-100's from AA and US. DC-10 Charter from Ryan. DC-9's and all of there vairents. RJ of all kinds including AC has a BAE 146. And those are only the one I can think of off the top of my head. The number of airlines is limited but hopfully that will change w/ the new International terminal. The top of the parking garages is the best place to see the entire field.

PHL

I think both airports stink from spotting from the gate areas bc of the new security.

However, if you have a chance, Philly is great for outdoor spotting. There is a road that stretches along the main runway and there are many viewing areas along the raod. U can take pics from aircarft whizzing over your head on landing or nice side shots furthur along the road. Plus there is this nice man that sells good polish sausage on the road, quite yummy.

Personally, I think 800am, 100pm or 5pm are the best times. At around 1 all the US 330-300's come in from Europe.

Have fun.
