Airfone

Fri Apr 26, 2002 10:44 am

I was recently on two american flights
AA 837 LGA-MCO, 757
AA 1438 MCO-LGA MD-80
and i noticed that the airfones didn't work. They had a sticker marked "Decativated Effective March 31, 2002" on them.
Why did they do this? Don't they make money off the phones?

The airphones get used so infrequently that many of the major carriers are suspending the service. With the increase of cell phones, most people find them pointless

Yes, I've noticed that hardly anyone uses the airfones anymore. They were cool when they first came out (cool concept anyway). But with cell phone plans offering US-wide or sometimes worldwide service at pretty affordable rates I can see the demise of airfones pretty soon. It will be a dying breed in short time.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Lack of use was one reason AA is getting rid of them. Another reason I heard in addition to lack of use was saving weight on the aircraft. Apparently all those phones and related equipment takes up valuable weight which adds to costs for the airline. AA used this same reason in regards to their color scheme.

Those aren't Airfones. Airfone is a brand name of the GTE in-flight telephone system. As far as I know, GTE is not making changes.

Those phones are AT&T Wireless' In-flight phone system. AT&T is pulling out of the business, hence the deactivation of AT&T systems.

How many people have used their cell phones in flight?

Of course we know we're not to use them!!  Wink/being sarcastic
