300 People Arrive For A 747 Flight 1 Hr Before Dep

Sun Sep 12, 1999 3:45 pm

I jumpsat on Tower air the other day. They have 747 service between Ft. Lauderdale and JFK.

The counter was empty until about about 1 hour to 45 minutes before the flight. Then the passengers arrived like herded cattle. Some arriving 15 minutes before. The check in line was 300 + people long.

Tower only had 7 agents available to board a 747 with 420 people.

When will travellers get a clue and arrive with time to spare. We left over 130 of them in line at the gate while we were on the way to JFK. The captain was watching his watch at exactly 2:45 he ordered the door closed passengers be damned.

Good call !!

For budjet fares you attract budget people who I guess aren't used to flying much. Any way that was the first Tower Air flight that I have ever been on that arrived on time.

At the bagage claim I noticed a few extra bags on the carousel. I wonder who they belonged to. Heheheh

Good on the captain!! Nothing annoys me more than people who rock up late for the flight, and what is worse when they think that they are not inconviniencing the others. the 300 plus who rocked up that late is a joke! Teach them a bloody good lesson I say!

I'm always one to show up @ least two hours before a flight. Not so I can get through all my formalites early, or so I'm not waiting in a line. I get there early so I can (generally) secure a window seat : )

Just out of curiosity, how early does Tower reccommend that passengers show up? There's no excuse for showing up 15-45 minutes before departure, but if Tower, like most airlines, reccommends 1 hour for domestic flights, then they should expect to have several hundred people show up and form a line 60 minutes prior to departure. The average traveller doesn't know that they are going to be on a 400 passenger airplane, they just know that they were told to reprt one hour before departure.

Supposedly, they strand pax often, in order to avoid being fined for late departures. If they could only get the staff to check pax in quicker this wouldn't happen. I avoid Tower Air at all costs.

Are you a pilot? If not, how did you get the jumpseat?

JETPILOT is our resident pilot who flies for a major US airline. And no, it's not Tower.

Tower Planes

Thu Sep 16, 1999 10:29 am

Tower has to have the absolute WORST, CRUMMIEST, POORLY MAINTAINED planes that have ever flown. I see them in SFO a lot over at the AA terminal (where the 1st UA LHR flight departs from)...I want to walk over to the nose and see how deep the grime layer is! The engines look like they're shot to hell...ugg...[shudders].

Its not a problem with plane construction but the age and wear on these planes. They are 747 "classics" from almost 30 years ago that have been thru a few owners probably and around the world. Its just like an old 1970 Chevy truck. Built to take the punishment, looked sweet when new, but when you put a million miles on the odometer and don't keep it in "mint" condition then it will look kind of ratty after 30 years....not to mention that the hubcaps might fall off!   If they'd put some more money into detailing & maintaining their planes they'd look great, but the bottom line is ........ $$$.

Yes that always has to be remembered. Tower Air's 747s are very old warriors. My question is when was their last accident? They seem to be operating safely to me.

Anyone here not been brainwashed by the airlines clap-trap (i.e. report 1 hr+ for a domestic flight, 2hr+ for international)? For those that have - who do you think it's more convenient for to suggest that you turn up a couple of hours early for a flight that itself has a duration of perhaps less than that? I'll give you a clue - it's not the customer! When was the last time you stood in line for the check-in and it was a smooth, dare I say efficient process? If it takes less than 1 minute to check-in at those e-ticket machines why-oh-why does it take 5 minutes per passenger when there's an agent?

How long do you have to check-in prior to boarding a greyhound bus? Why should air-travel these days be any different?

My proposal: the airlines assign seating at time of reservation and employ pre-screeners to interview customers in the check-out line (some do when the lines are especially long), directing those with problem-tickets/special requests to special counters staffed by the most competent agents while the rest of us just dump our luggage, get the boarding pass and and are on our way.

Jetpilot: you need to check this out:

a quote: "The police tried their best to calm the crowd. However, when they mentioned that this was a regular occurrence on the part of Tower Air the crowd grew even angrier. The policeman had mentioned that Tower Air repeatedly leaves passengers stranded at the gate because they do not want to pay airline penalties for departing late, and that he is often called to this particular flight when he is on duty.
