Sitting On The Ground!

Sun Apr 28, 2002 10:28 am

I was on a flight from Denver to Chicago on the 24th on American. We pushed bac an hour late, taxied to a diffrent part of the tarmac, and sat there for 3 hours because of weather... I dont see why they just didnt go back to the gate.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Simple answer: No available gate! Or, the airline didn't want to pay for the gate, which is usually not very cheap.

Happens all the time.

Did they give you at least some drinks and something to eat?

Was the bad weather at Denver or Chicago?

Some airlines board all paxs and close up even when they know they have a late(r) ATC slot. If an earlier slot opens up they can leave immediately... they may not be able to take advantage of any earlier slots that may open up if they had to round up passengers and board them.

A common problem is just not knowing when airspace will be opened back up. What the airline is trying to prevent is sending you back to the gate, only to find out you were clear to depart as you're blocking back in.
Ask why..

I think your pilots were banking on being able to move up a slot but didn't quite work out so you had to inadvertently sit there. Or, as mentioned, maybe the gate had to be used for another incoming flight therefore you were unable to go back. This has happened to me before at LGA. It's kinda tiring just sitting there at the corner of the airport waiting for clearance.

Simple answer, really. If they push back within 15 minutes of the scheduled departure time it is counted as an on-time departure. You might then sit on the ramp for 3 hours but, for statistical purposes, you departed on time. Sneaky, huh?

I know at ORD they call this holding area the "Penalty Box". I've been stuck in it too. Aptly named, wouldn't you say?

Yeah I know about that penalty box at ORD. But it seems like you sit there for more than two minutes.  Smile

I've been there. Mine was a Continental flight from RDU to EWR. We sat just short of the runway in Raleigh for just around 2 hours because of heavy traffic in Newark. They shut down the engines and everything, that way people could get up and use the restrooms. They served water also. Atleast they parked us in a place with a great view to watch planes pass by and take off or land, so that was cool. I started sweating because I had a connecting international flight to catch in Newark, but we made it there just in time. It's always good to take the earlier flight when connecting with a international flight incase something unexpected like that comes up.
