Airbus officials just left MLA en-route to FRA onboard Airbus Industrie A320 demonstrator F-WWIZ in TACA colours. The Boeing/Airbus war is raging on here as AirMalta is being pressured by both the manufacturers and the Government (the major shareholder) for a decision. A deadline has reportedly been now set for 15 May. It is now common knowledge that the airline has recently signed a lease agreement with ILFC for the lease of some 10-12 aircraft, no mention what type, for delivery to start in December 2003. Among the issues which will most certainly effect the decision are Malta's advanced application to join the EU and the American contract awards to the Malta Drydocks for the repair cruise liners and warships.
Another war is raging around the sale of 40% shares in the Malta International Airport (MIA). But that is a different story.
All this makes a normally dull, by comparison, local aviation scene extremely hot in anticipation.
