Midway 737 At MSY This Morning

Mon Apr 29, 2002 11:21 am

As I was appraoching Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport this morning at around 8:45, I noticed a bright yellow tail sticking up at Concourse C. Upon closure inspection, it turned out to be a Midway 737-700, parked at gate C1. I did not know that Midway was doing charters, but it sure was nice to see the yellow bird back at MSY. Hopefully they will return to MSY in the future, as their loads were always quite good, MSY-RDU is an underserved market.

Actually, I don't think JI does charters...I don't understand why it was there...Possibly a stopover for a 737 brought back into service? Wouldn't be a diversion-they don't have any routes that go anywhere near MSY. Maybe they are bringing RDU-MSY back... How did RDU-MSY do before the collapse?

...or maybe I am ignorant, and they do do charters...

Midway did good out of MSY. I flew them back in December of 2000 and both CRJ flights were oversold. Last June they switched both nonstops from CRJ's to 73G's. I knew the JI station manager here and she told me that they were profitable from MSY and the loads were quite good...even on the 737's. I hope they do come back.

Midway was operating a charter flight from MSY-DCA.

I wish they would bring back both MSY and SDF. They always were full SDF-RDU -- talk about an underserved market.

I wish they would bring back some CRJs. That way they could open up to underserved routes that were formerly profitible, such as MSY and SDF, without having to fly half empty 737s if the routes turn unprofitable. I see this as a next step for JI. Bring back CRJs and formerly profitable routes utilizing the smaller aircraft.
