Intl. Carriers @ IAH

Mon Apr 29, 2002 11:32 am

Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, and KLM have been serving IAH as long as I can remember? When did these carriers start service to IAH?

I know KLM has been around since IAH opened. I'm not sure about the rest.

KLM has been around long before IAH opened. I am not completely positive but I think they started service in 1953. Correct me if I am wrong.

The IAH-LGW route was originally British Caledonian. I believe it started around 1980.

I've seen pictures of Air France planes in Houston before IAH opened. I think I've seen propeller driven AF planes at Hobby dating from the late fifties or early sixties.

Also, I think its obvious that the lengthy KLM service is due to Shell's lengthy presence in Houston. There may have even been joint ownership of Royal Dutch Shell and Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) at one time.

Lufthansa is a relatively new arrival: late eighties or early nineties.

kind regards,

Shell Oil (a div of Royal Dutch) is based in Houston (The US div that is).

as a side note- there are many other Int'l carriers at IAH. Did you need a whole list or just histories of these 4????

The Newest I think is now Air Jamaica.

In addition to the aforementioned, Air Jamaica, AeroMexico, Aviateca, Cayman Airways, Grupo TACA, and Air Canada, as well as one other Mexican carrier (Aeroliteral?) service IAH. In the past IAH has seen South African Airways and Gulf Air, and I think Copa.

Do Cargo Carriers Count? Cargolux flies there. I was flying through houston Class B at night on the 24th of this month in a 172 and passed pretty close to a cargolux 747......I thought it was a pretty cool airplane.

KLM started service to HOU in 1957. AF dates back to the early '60s, LH started circa 1984-85.

IAH also saw service from SAHSA before they went out of business, as well as LACSA before they were swallowed up by Grupo TACA.
