United Launches Chicago-Milan Service!

Mon Apr 29, 2002 10:12 pm

United Airlines will launch its first scheduled service between Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Milan, Italy on Oct. 28th, 2002.

The new daily nonstop flight increases to 11 the number of international destinations served nonstop by United from Chicago.

"We are very excited to add Milan to the roster of five European destinations served nonstop by United from its hometown," said Stuart Oran, United Airlines senior vice president-international.

United will operate the daily nonstop flight to Milan with Boeing 777 aircraft configured with 12 suites in United First, 49 seats in United Business and 231 seats in United Economy.

The schedule for United's new flight between Chicago and Milan is as follows:

UA 988 will depart from Chicago at 5:35 p.m. and arrive in Milan at 9:25 a.m. the following day.

UA 987 will depart from Milan at 11:15 a.m. (beginning Oct. 29) and will arrive in Chicago at 2:25 p.m. The new service is timed to permit convenient connections for passengers originating their travel between the U.S. Midwest and the West Coast.

United already serves Milan daily from Washington Dulles.

Chicago is the number one U.S. buisness city for Italy. The route has had a lack of service since AA dropped it Nov. 2001.

That's great, but doesn't United only serve three cities from Chicago (LHR, CDG, FRA), making Milan #4 (not #5)? Dusseldorf was moved from ORD to IAD.

Alitalia flies ORD-MXP daily. I am surprised they are launching ORD-MXP over SFO-MXP. SFO has a large Italian population and no non-stop links. They announced SFO-MXP a while ago but it never surfaced. None the less, ORD does offer more connection oppurtunites. The US-Italy market is getting a boost this summer:

ATL-FCO daily
ATL-MXP daily

BOS-MXP daily

CVG-FCO daily

EWR-FCO 2x daily
EWR-MXP 2x daily

IAD-MXP daily

JFK-FCO 3x daily
JFK-MXP 2x daily

MIA-MXP daily

ORD-FCO daily
ORD-MXP 2x daily

PHL-FCO daily

New flights to ORD, ATL, and CVG; increased flights to PHL, EWR, and JFK. But SFO and LAX are gone.

Good for UA and ORD. But I wish someone other than USAir flew into Rome from the east coast or midwest. I will not fly Alitalia. Does CO?

Well, all those who can, get on a flight to Milan then, because I have just visited this city and it is very nice indeed. And from Milan, you can take the train down to Florence, Rome, Siena etc.

Italy-Europe's home of trend, good food and great weather!

BTW, I too thought Alitalia weren't that good, but I recently flew them from MXP and FCO to LHR, and they're actually fine-I have nothing bad to say about their service.

Regards

That's a good news for Milan MXP.
After that some flights to US were dropped, like ORD by AA, SFO and LAX by AZ, now this new UA service with B772 plus the new DL/AZ to ATL. And very soon AZ increase flight to Japon with NRT from 5 to 10 weekly flights and KIX from 3 to 5 weekly flights.

I think MXP-SFO-MXP will return once AZ gets enough 777-200ER's.

The reason is simple: unlike the 767-300(ER) AZ used earlier, the 772ER doesn't have payload restrictions flying MXP-SFO, so the plane can carry a substantial cargo load (which makes WAY more money for AZ than pax). Don't be surprised if this route is revived by the Spring of 2003.

On June 1st Northwest returns to Rome between DTW and FCO. Northwest used to also serve Milan but dropped that service I think a year ago.

United only will have 11 international destinations out of ORD? That really surprises me. That can't be right!

Northwest has more international services out of DTW than 11

UA is really determined to run themselves out business aren't they?

US to Italy was a breakeven venture at best. Hence, AA pulling out and before that TW.

Now that AZ is allied with AF and DL it's really going to get rough.

UA should learn from what they and LH did to carriers trying to fly to Germany. You don't see alot new FRA service these days do you?

Padcrasher, it really depends. Italy attracts a lot of low-yielding tourists, but it has some very high-yielding traffic to make up for it. Chicago and Boston have the Italian communities, Miami has the fashion industry, Atlanta has connections from every US city that the flight is bound to fill up in front, and NYC is NYC. Though I guess your probably right in saying it's break-even, but US carriers seem to be expecting a good summer to Italy this year.

MXP is Italy Financial capital. Thats why UA has choosen to fly to MXP over FCO. Rome has too many low-yeild tourtists, and UA has been trying to position themselves as a buisness airline.

Especially odd as the State Department has issued warnings about US citizens travelling to Italy!

Milan has a lot of room for new non-stop flights to US.
Today over the 50% of Milan business traveller to US, use to fly via FRA,ZRH,MUC,AMS,CPH and LHR (I don't consider CDG cause of the AF/AZ deal).
So I expect one day AA will go back, maybe to JFK in spite of ORD, and also NW from DTW.

It seems odd to launch this route in late October which is the beginning of the slow season for European travel. Not an easy time to make money flying to Europe...

Airblue, if AA goes back, I wouldn't be expect JFK. Already has three carriers. I wouldn't be surprised to see it from MIA, since MIA-MXP has a lot of fashion industry traffic and I'm sure they want a piece of that market that Alitalia controls. Plus the Brazil connections. DFW also would not surprise me. Milan could use a connection to another major hub. The connection possiblities are endless. Alitalia will probably be back on LAX-MXP and SFO-MXP within two years. I wouldn't expect Northwest back, however. They have AMS to feed to MXP.

I am quite surprised that it's a 777 rather than a 767-300. They must know what they are doing, though. In my book, ORD-Milan qualifies as a sort of 'long-and-thin' route. Here on the Boston-Heathrow route UA uses a 767-300, and I would have expected by now they'd bump it up to a 777 (like AA has). But I guess the reason they haven't is because there's already plenty of capacity on this run with BA fielding 2 747-400s and a 777; Virgin a 747-400; AA with a 777 and a 767-300. The need for something bigger may just not be there for UAL on the BOS-LHR route. Although with some fanfair a few years back UA noted that they were re-doing their terminal at Logan and that some gates would be redesigned to accept the 777. Thus far, nary a UA 777 anywhere to be seen here, save for the occasional medical/operational divert.

Airworthy, UA also serves MVD from MIA as an extension of the EZE route and SJO from LAX as an extension of the GUA route.

Vermeer, tell your "sources" that they need to update themselves on AA's route network. AA flies to Rome daily from Chicago O'Hare.

On AA:
ORD-FCO comes back May 1st for summer seasonal service on a 763.
ORD-MXP, a sucessful route for nearly 10 years was cut post-9/11.

On NW, DTW-FCO returns summer seasonal on the DC-10. DTW-MXP didn't last long, it made it one summer. There was much hype to launch of DTW-FCO & DTW-MXP for summer 2000. The MXP route flopped fast and was taken off that fall. FCO made it to stay summer seasonal.

In addition, MEL is an extension of UA's SFO-SYD service.

Strech 8,

Yes, CO flies daily to FCO on a 767-400 (down from a 777) and daily to MXP on a 767-200.

Any chance that UA will reinstate FCO service again? It has been gone for several years (also MAD).
