US Airways Plans New Caribbean Service From Charlotte

ARLINGTON, Va., April 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways today filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for route authority to serve the Caribbean island of Providenciales from its Charlotte hub. The airline is seeking approval to begin service in November 2002, using new state-of-the-art Airbus A319 aircraft, offering seating for 120 passengers
with 12 seats in First Class and 108 seats in Coach Class. Providenciales, located in the western part of the Turks and Caicos Islands, will be served with four flights weekly. The new route will expand service between Charlotte and the Caribbean to 12 destinations, and will increase US Airways' overall Caribbean network to 18 jet destinations. Additional Caribbean points are served by US Airways Express carriers. "This new route will enhance the range and choice of Caribbean destinations for travelers originating and connecting through US Airways' Charlotte hub," said Douglas Leo, vice president of international. "Providenciales is a popular destination with a strong focus on tourism development."
Providenciales, the most developed island in the Turks and Caicos, offers white sand beaches considered among the best in the Caribbean. The island has a championship golf course, a selection of fine hotels, and is popular for sailing and scuba-diving.
US Airways announced last week that it will introduce new weekly service between Philadelphia and the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, starting Dec. 7,
US Airways currently serves the following Caribbean destinations: Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cancun, Cozumel, Freeport, Grand Cayman, Montego
Bay, Nassau, San Juan, Santo Domingo, St. Croix, St. Lucia, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. US Airways Express also serves North Eleuthera, Governors Harbour,
Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay from Florida.
