Old BA Operations Out Of Prestwick

Thu May 02, 2002 5:24 am

Which routes did BA serve out of Prestwick? I have seen shots at A.net of amongst other types, VC-10's, HS748's and especially 747's, when and where did these operate? Now BA serves only Glasgow Intl., did the airline ever operate out of both airports at the same time?

I thought Prestwick was also used for tech stops on long flights that 707s for example couldnt reach striaght from london... maybe that was something else tho.

Pretty sure most of the PIK routes originated at MAN. Destinations (I think): JFK, Chicago-Montreal and Toronto.

Pre-1990, the long-haul flights could only have used PIK, so they never operated long-haul types from both airports at the same time. Different matter on diversions en-route LHR though as both could have been used.

Forgot to say that I think the mid to late 1970s may have been the heyday of BA transatlantic operations at PIK as I believe that by March 1980, all services had ceased.

I flew on a VC10 (G-ASGL) JFK-PIK in December 1978.
