Swiss And MAS Starts Code-share Today!

Thu May 02, 2002 7:29 am

Swiss had started their code-share operations with Malaysia Airlines (MAS) today, May 1, 2002. Swiss will place their code on MAS' three times weekly Kuala Lumpur (KUL) - Zurich (ZRH) v.v. services. The three weekly services are currently operated using a B747-400, which would be changed to a B777-200 services on June 7, 2002. With effective from July 1, 2002, MAS' service to Zurich will become a turnaround service once again after rerouting it's flight from KUL-ZRH-FCO to KUL-FCO-VIE. MAS used to code-share with Swissair, but the agreement was suspended when Swissair collapse.

The flight number for ZRH-KUL is LX 4310 while the return, KUL-ZRH is LX 4311. The funny thing is, these flights is not loaded up into Swiss' CRS, but they are up in Amadeus. And neither airlines have announced this new code-share deal. Anybody had any ideas on this? Thank you.

Regards.

This is good news. MAS is a good airline. I flew last year from ZRH to KUL on a 777 and liked the flight and the service. KUL is a neat airport, modern and not overcrowded.

Does anybody know, how the loads on this code share with Swissair were last year?

Wings Alliance

Isn't Malaysia supposed to be a member of Wings?

Is this the reason for their keeping it low-profile?

As far as I'm aware the so-called Wings Alliance has never been officially announced. Besides, many airlines have code-share agreements independent of their alliances.

Gerardo: I don't know about the loads, but I guess they were pretty good. The last time I flew with Swissair back in 2000, there was not a single seat left in all cabins on the flight to and from Zurich. It's not that easy to get a 100% load factor in June. So, I would have the assumption that they were pretty good, seeing that MAS planned to increase their frequency to Zurich to 5 times weekly last year, but of course didn't materialize. If the loads were bad, I don't think Swiss is keen on code-sharing with MAS at all, after all, they would not want top follow their predecesor path.

Flanor/Nickofatlanta: Nick is right in the sense that Wings have never ever been launched, it's just a term used by the media industry. MAS enjoys pretty good bilateral relationship with KLM. The thing is, MAS and NWA were granted the anti-trust immunity (ATI) back in November 2000, the first ATI between and American and an Asian carrier. However, they have not utilized that at all. In NWA's website, it was stated that their relationship with MAS would commence in 2002, which we all hope is really soon. MAS did not really coordinate their schedules in order for the to code-share with NWA at NWA's hub in Tokyo for the trans-Pacific flight. And another thing is that MAS is flying into Newark, NJ instead of JFK, where normally international airlines fly. Could this be a sign that MAS might be code-sharing with CO?
