Emirates' Ascension

Sat May 04, 2002 3:56 am

Emirates Airlines of the UAE has become increasingly prominent, prestigious and influential in the commercial aviation industry over the last 3-5 years. I dare say that within the next 3-5 years, Emirates will be challenging the likes of Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and British Airways at the top of the airline rankings from passengers and industry observers alike.

With this rise in prominence, Emirates will become a target for the major alliances around the world. Which one should they end up joining and why?

I think that Emirates should join Delta's SKYTEAM alliance. That way, it can hold a prominent "founders" position.

Not sure, but I think there was initially some resistance from Emirates management to joining an alliance (?)

I have no idea, although they do already code-share with a number of airlines, including BA.

Capt.Picard,
Emirates management reiterated at their results that they do not have any intentions of joining any alliances. In fact, Maurice Flanagan had a big go at them. I'll try and dig up the exact quote.

But wouldn't it be viable for them in the end to join an alliance?
