WKYC 3 has been doing excellent coverage of the terminal evacuation at Cleveland Hopkins. Apparently, a screening machine detected explosive residue on a bag and tipped off personel at the security checkpoints to Concourses C and D, which are used by Continental and Continental Express. Currently flights are flying in and out of Hopkins again, however an America West plane going to PHX was turned back to CLE, supposedly the aircraft where the bag was supposed to be going. This is confusing, since I was under the impression that America West used gates in Concourse A, not C. For more information:

HP 212 is the AmWest that was turned back. It just left about half an hour ago. Nice to know that the security pukes can catch explosive residue. Not nice to know it is well after the aircraft has departed that they finally do and have to bring it back. I still detest airport security.

There is a good chance this was a non-issue. The machines are prone to false positives and explosive residue can mean many things. However, the incident points to how piss poor our airport security remains. The government talks a lot, makes it look like they are doing something (a terror alert color scheme based on Skittles and M&M colors) is arrogant, baffoonish, and downright stupid.

What we need are competent, trained, intelligent, and ENGLISH SPEAKING airport security screeners backed up by a military presence, not the illusion that one is there. What we have now are underpaid illiterates and criminals doing the work of what should be an intelligence operation.

FlyCMH, HP does use A Concourse, but ATC at Hopkins initiated a airport-wide Ground Stop for a short period if time when the plane turned back and landed. That lasted about 20 minutes.

We took a lot of 2, 2 1/2, and 3hour delays this afternoon and this evening as the system tried to catch up. Heard on WJW-TV tonight that the employee had been removed from his duties pending an investigation. Made for a looog day at work.

When I was out at CLE yesterday, I was listening to the Amereica West pilot talk to the tower after they landed. He said that company told him to taxi back to the gate but the tower told him to park on a remote taxiway. The pilot sounded pretty upset, because no one was really telling him what was going on. The tower would only tell him that "Company has some questions about the aircraft," and that they would talk to him face to face when they got to the aircraft. He eventually taxied to the gate on the A concourse with the fire trucks and equipment following him there.

As far as the closure of 24R, it looks like it will be a while! I haven't heard what they're doing, but it looks to be related to the construction of the new runway. It is causing some seriously interesting traffic patterns! Runway 28/10 has been in use almost constantly since they closed 24R.

24R is closed from May 1 till May 15. Apparently it's to do some work on the new runway.
