Will A380 Replace B747 In Your Heart?

Sat May 04, 2002 6:15 am

Looking on a previous post, there are a lot of 747 fans in here? But is it merely because the plane is so damn big? Therefore, when the A380 comes out, since it will be much larger than the 747, will it replace the Boeing in your heart?

NEVER!!! I live and die by the Boeing 747! Long live the 747.

By the way, the reason that 747's are not selling well at this time is that most of the airlines are quite satisfied with their current fleet of 747's. But by the end of the decade, when some of the 747-400's start to approach 20 years old, then Boeing MUST come up with a 747 that will have the huge size like the A380 yet shall carry pax amounts similair to the 744. Hopefully this will lead to much wider seats in the economy class and other cabins.

Definately NOT, the 380 may be technically superior (and Airbus does make great planes) but one look at the 747 makes me realize that it is a classic.

No, absolutely not!

I believe that Airbus products are just not as good as Boeing products. I know that Airbus has a relatively good track record, however look at how long Boeing has been making jetliners and how extensive their product offering is. The A380 has yet to fly, and I believe that it will suffer many of the problems that the original 747 did in the 60's. The plane was too big for airports of the time and it was overweight. The 747 has to wait awhile to get some better performing engines to make it a worthwhile aircraft. The A380 will only be good for some of the long haul routes where high-density once a day flights are common. The A380 will probably require 12,000-15,000 foot runways to take off fully loaded and this will not be too high on many airports priority list to lengthen and widen runways to handle it. I believe that the 747 is what one would call right-sized for most airline needs. Who wants to get on an aircraft for a super-long flight anyway? I mean having to spend 14.5 hours in a 747 breathing recirculated air and sitting that long on the LAX to Sydney flight is long as I would want to be in an aircraft. The A380 will probably not be as widely used or produced as the 747 and I think that it may be too big!
You wouldn't understand, it's a Texas Thang!

look at how long Boeing has been making jetliners

Boeing: since 1958, 44 years.
Airbus: since 1974, 28 years.
Airbus antecedents: since 1952, 50 years.

how extensive their product offering is

Boeing: 100 to 420 seats in 5 cabin widths
Airbus: 100 to 380 seats in 2 cabin widths, soon to be to 500 seats in 3 cabin widths.

The A380 will only be good for some of the long haul routes

Evidence?

The A380 will probably require 12,000-15,000 foot runways to take off fully loaded

Says who?

Who wants to get on an aircraft for a super-long flight anyway?

Evidently, the people who need to travel long distances, for whom the alternative is layovers at intermediate stops.

Heck no! Magnificent as it will be in it's own right, the fat, guppylike A380 will never have the elegance of the B747 in flight. This isn't an anti-Airbus rant, it's just that the graceful hump and streamlined shape of the 747 is far more distinctive than the stubby, chunky silhouette the A380 presents. The Airbus may be a more efficient people-mover but it doesn't stir my soul the way the old 'Jumbo' still does. I still hope at some point, Boeing revives the 747X Stretch to do battle with the new giant, at the right price, it could still be a contender.

For me it won't replace the 747, because of the unique shape of the aircraft. The A380 looks like to aircraft on top of each other. There is really nothing fancy about them.

NEVER.. the A380 in sketches looks VERY bland. It may be bigger but does not look it.

It will never replace the 747. The "Jumbo" will always be the classic that every member of the public recognise the world over.

I suspect most non aviation people would not recognise an A380 if they tripped over it..

If it's around long enough it might get its own place, but it won't replace the 747.

The A-380 will use LESS runway than the 747-400 and fits in the 80x80 meter box, so most of the major airports will already accomodate it. Those that don't can't handle the stretched 777s or A-340s now either.

Let's wait until you have seen the A380 before calling it "fat" or "ugly".

And talking about 15k ft runways and other boeing-fan-panic is bullshit, it'll need a bit more than 3000m to get out at MTOW, that's approx. the same as the 744.

I think the A380 will be popular in younger generations hearts. Nothing can replace the 747 in my heart. The A380 may be able to hold nearly 5 or 6 hundred people(not sure about the numbers). Now think of how long it takes to load a full 747, the number of people in the gate is already alot for some airports to handle while a 747 loads. An aircraft carrying even more people can only mean more people waiting at the gate, longer loading times, getting to the airport early and waiting longer on the ground before you even take off. All those people getting off a plane can only mean more hassles at the baggage claim area. To me, its not worth it.

The 747 is very special, to this day, I still think there is something exciting about flying on a 747.

That being said, the A380 will be a magnificent aircraft.....and there is something special about the newest and biggest!

The A380, however big, great or advanced, will never take the place in my heart that is currently occupied by the 747!! It might however, with time, get it's own place nearby...

NEVER EVER! The 747 is duh BEST looking jetliner in the sky! The A330, 777, and A340 look real good too. But the A380 looks like a chubby monkey, or an overweight one. Just my opinion.

Considering that I think the 707 is the best airplane ever built, this is a moot point to me. I hope to live long enough to see a 380 though.

Up to this moment, I still cannot convince myself to like the look of the A380!!! Maybe I will change my mind when I get a chance to fly in it but for now, 747 is still my fav airliner and nothing else can replace it (yet)!

A380 Must Not Replace B747 In Your Heart?

Sat May 04, 2002 3:13 pm

Absoluty no, Boeing 747 cannot be replaced by Airbus A380 in my heart forever. Even Airbus A380 is much larger than Boeing 747, but I don't think big equal to good. I think Airbus A380 is a big monster only, seem not safe for carrying so many passengers, and the looking is bulk and stupid. I love Boeing 747 forever, Airbus A380? No way !!!

The mighty Jumbo (the only plane that deserves that name) was the first to "get there". Nothing will take that away from the 747. I think you got your answer by now, but for good measure I will say that, no, the 380 will not replace the 747 in my heart.

Well no.

Despite the arrival of the Gigatop, I will always remember how hard-working the Megatops of the Singapore Airlines Limited fleet have done for them over the past 20+ years (to date).

But the A380 is much more spacious and SIA can innovate loads more in there.

For me the nicest looking jetliner ever is the DC-8-63.
I also like the 757-300, it's almoast like an up-to-date
DC-8. Never cared much for the 747 but maybe
thats because of my old age. I still think one of the
most beautiful airliners was the Super Constellation.

Sorry, I'm losing the track here. 747 versus A380.
I just can't wait to see the A380 in real life. I think
she will be a killer (inappropriate pun not intended).
I think the arrival of the A380 is the biggest happening
in the aircraft industry in over 30 years (since the 747).
What do you guys mean by "not good looking".
I think the A380 has cleaner lines than the bulky 747.
Go Airbus, go (and I'm saying this even though I am
a shareholder in Boeing).

The 747 brought air travel to the masses in the early 70's. It's a classic, and in that way, could never be replaced by the A380.

I guess I can first give you an answer once the A380 is here and I have seen it with my own eyes.
I think that the 747 will always be something really special since it is the only commercial plane with a hump (better known as upper deck...) whereby the A380 is more or less a "normal" plane just much larger.
But size isn't all as seen with the 777. Many people fell in love with it that were head-over-heals in love with the Jumbo before.
Time will tell.

Who knows, lets wait to see the A380 in real. I guess it will replace the 747 in a lot of airline's hearts, but we will always have a bunch of enthousiasts supporting the 747. I am so sad that Boeing has not developped a next generation 747 to compete more efficiently, but that's life. The A380 will be a gigantic machine, and therefore will receive a lot of enthousiasm from spotters anyway. I will be one of those for sure, congrats Airbus!

No new aircraft will ever replace the 747. The 747's size enormity and unique fuselage hump distinguishes it from other planes, making it one of the most recognisable jets ever and it always be the most well known aircraft to have ever graced the skies. I don't think anyone is in a position to comment on the technical performance of the A380 and its appearance yet, because it hasn't even been built! But there's no question about it: the 747 is the greatest aircraft ever!

To me the A380 will be just like any other plane. They make such a big deal about it on the airbus site about being able to have a lounge, duty free shopping, showers, etc, but you know no airline is going to do that. They will all just see how many people can fit in side. On the outside its just another big plane, but the 747 is the first of the big passenger aircraft. Not to take away from the A380, but aren't there already a few russian heavy lifters that are bigger than it? What about the C-5 too..

I will reserve any judgement about the A380-800 until I see one for real.  Smile

I do know that the A340-600 is one stunning-looking plane, based on seeing F-WWCC flying out of SFO twice.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

But historically, the 747 has already established its historical niche because it was the plane that brought down the cost international air travel to reasonable levels. Have you ever seen the cost of a transatlantic ticket during the 707/DC-8 days? US$500 one-way during the 1960's was considered a cheap ticket!! Today, if you find the right sale you can fly JFK-LHR for US$200 one way.

The 747 is a unique and special plane and i love it. Even saying the words "seven-four-seven" sounds really cool. I'll wait until the A380 come out and then i'll be able to say if it has the potential to replace the 747. Unless boeing come up with a new and improved version of the jumbo, then i can see the 747 fading into the distance the A380 taking over the as the king of the skies!

The A380 will not replace the 747, it will bring a new seat market into the aviation industry, it is not even meant to replace or compete with the 747.

Give me a break. I am old and think that the DC-7C's, the Connies and the Comet-4's where the real airplanes but even I can appreciate some of the newer aircraft (e.g. like the Tristar (told you I am old)). Seems that some of you 747-lovers just can't accept that another airliner soon will be "queen of the skies".

I agree with all of you that the 747 will remain in my heart as this aircraft was the first aircraft of its size and it did make travelling easier as it could and still can carry more passengers to date. I do think the A380 will be as revolutionary as the 747 because of its size. Like the 747, the A380 will be the first aircraft of its size. I also agree with the ones who want to see the A380 first before making any judgements as this aircraft has not been built yet. The next generation will probably see the A380 as their "Queen of the Skies" as mentioned by a few members here. I can imagine the A380 getting much attention from spotters around the world because of its enormous size. Both the 747 and A380 will have a place in my heart
