Question On Northwest At YOW

Sun May 05, 2002 2:13 pm

Could anyone tell me what aircraft Northwest uses on the YOW-DTW route?

I've seen the Saab 340A on a few occasions, however i'd like to know if they send any other aircraft type to YOW during the summer season.

BTW: The other day i saw there was an aircraft wearing the former Canadian Airlines livery at YOW. Shouldnt have Air Canada repainted all its planes by now?!?!

1) NW has used all Saabs (Mesaba) until now, but they have just replaced two of the 4 daily flights with CRJs (Express I).
2) It was probably an F-28. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they're repainting the Fokkers.

Some of the F-28's are in Air Canada's scheme. While these ones were painted early on, they won't be painted into Jazz's colours. Also, there are some F28's in Canadian's old scheme as well as one in a proud wings scheme.

There is at least 732 still in full Canadian livery....the GTAE group saw it 2 weeks ago at YYZ.

...Of course its days are no doubt very numbered. Sigh.

Regarding NW at YOW.....when NW began YOW service in the mid-90's, they started with mainline DC-9's, then relatively soon after downgraded to NW Airlink 340's.

Thanks for the info guys!

By the way, the plane for sure wasnt a Fokker. I only saw the tail of the aircraft from the airport terminal; it was in the most recent Canadian Airlines scheme. From the tail, i would guess that it was a Boeing 737-200. Anyhow i thought it was interesting that they had not painted the tail to the AC norm.

Cap'n Dan, could you tell the approximate YOW departure times of the CRJs and SAABs with NW.

Thanks ahead!

JU101, check oag.com for flight times. A great schedule resource for all airline skeds.

Yyz717, thanks for the site.

Apparently all four flights are with the Saab :-(

It would be nicer to see NW send a larger plane twice daily instead! YOW needs larger planes from the US!

JU101, you guys are getting the CRJ on 2 of the 4 dailys in July. Until then, all 4 are still on Saab's.

Starting August 1, (assuming the Bombardier strike doesn't linger on and Express I has enough CRJ's to cover all the planned routes)

August:
NW 5699 YOW 6:15 AM DTW 8:00 AM CRJ
NW 3113 YOW 8:35 AM DTW 10:50 AM SF3
NW 3252 YOW 12:00 PM DTW 2:19 PM SF3
NW 5911 YOW 4:15 PM DTW 6:00 PM CRJ

NW 3076 DTW 9:20 AM YOW 11:26 AM SF3
NW 5647 DTW 1:50 PM YOW 3:25 PM CRJ
NW 3377 DTW 5:30 PM YOW 7:40 PM SF3
NW 5977 DTW 9:20 PM YOW 10:55 PM CRJ

Yeah the NW CRJs don't come until Aug 1st. On an interesting side note, AC is using now using the 319 to LGA on the 1700 departure, daily except Sat.

As for the Canadian 732 that you saw, it was either one of the 2 old CPs that Neil (yyz717) mentioned that have yet to be repainted or, the more likely explanation is that it was Canadian North (5T, yes, unknown to most, Canadian still exists). 5T doesn't have a flight on Saturdays so their aircraft just sits at gate 6 all day until the following morning. I see it along with their 732s in Proud Wings all the time.

CRA F28s are very rare in YOW nowadays. We only get the occassional one as a DND flight, and even that may be done as I believe with the Jazz CRJs all F28s will be moved out west until their retirement at the end of the year.

JU101:
You're right on about YOW needing more mainline flights. I started a thread on that a few weeks ago.

Technically YOW does have a lot of mainline transborder flights, it's just that they are mainly with AC CRJs, which don't have a "mainline feel" to them.

Here's something else of note...On June 1st, American Eagle is returning to YOW.  Smile However, this time it's twice a day to ORD, instead of going back to BOS with ERJ-140s to complement the double daily AA mainline flights.

I have all this info on my webpage at http://www.geocities.com/ottawa_yow

YOW:
Thanks for the info. You, Lymanm, and I (and any other YOW area fans) should organize our own answer to the GTAE...
