Sharon On Arkia To US?

Mon May 06, 2002 4:15 am

Hi,

I just saw on the News the info about Prime Minister Sharon going to US. They showed him claiming the stairs and boarding Arkia plane. I don't know which one but for sure that was Arkia.
Is he flying to US on Arkia or they just played some old tape?

I would be surprised if he flew Arkia. El Al is the national airline of Israel. It would be like Tony Blair flying British Midland over to the USA.

no no...it's not an old tape. PM Sharon is flying with Arkia for, financial reasons.

Indeed, Arkia asked $180'000, while El-Al wanted 360'000.

Here's a link to Haaretz article on the matter : http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=158987&contrassID=2&subContrassID=1&sbSubContrassID=0&listSrc=Y

The article mentions that the plane will be 767, but since Arkia has no 767, it should be read "757"

How is a 757 getting from Israel to the US? With a fuel stop?

It is stopping in Europe somewhere, most likely an RAF base.

Why not use the recently upgraded VIP 707-300 (IAF)? Since when does the Israeli PM travel on civilian airliners?  Confused

Hmmm, if Sharon lands at an RAF air base, will he be arrested for war crimes?

I live in hope ... but I doubt it!  Sad

Well put, LY744. There's a non-aviation forum for these types of discussions.
Btw, I thought El Al owned part of Arkia, but I am prepared to be corrected on this one...

I only saw a close-up on the news. Wonder if it was a 753.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Why not use the recently upgraded VIP 707-300 (IAF)?

Well...upgraded or not upgraded, it is still a 707...Remember when PM Netanyahu's 707 had to make an emergency descent after a depressurization...? I think it's more secure to fly on a modern airplane, rather than in these ooooold IAF 707s which are permanently standing in the rain, sun and dust of BGN's runways...

Since when does the Israeli PM travel on civilian airliners?

For decades, Israeli PMs travelled ONLY with El-Al.

Btw, I thought El Al owned part of Arkia, but I am prepared to be corrected on this one...

El-Al had a participation in Arkia, but that was a long time ago... Arkia is privately owned, and thus totally free to fly on Saturdays...which constitutes a major advantage.

The article says it would be a 767 (which Arkia doesn't have)... hmm... from what I saw on TV it looked like LY old colors.

It was written 767, but you should have read 757...I mentionned it in my first post...

If the PM was flying LY it wouldn't be on a 757, but rather a 767 ; there's [sadly !!] no 767 left in the old colors...

Sorry Toda, overread that.
So it must have been an Arkia 757 in old LY colors?

Are you sure it was in the old LY colors? I haven't seen the TV... but here's what Jarek sad in his first post :
"They showed him claiming the stairs and boarding Arkia plane. I don't know which one but for sure that was Arkia."

Could you describe the colors? I mean, the old LY livery was sooooo unique...

I also saw the Arkia sign on the inside of the door, but it was unmistakebly the old LY blue cheatline.

and in this case you're right : it must have been an Arkia 757 in old LY colors.

Well fellows, Sharon indeed flew with the Arkia's B757-300.
They made a fuel stop in Ireland.

The idea not to fly with IAF B707 was taken since the Israeli president Mr. Moshe Kazav flew last year to the US and he flew with LY in order not to make large expenses to the Israeli Government.
The reason is that to use the IAF is still more expensive then to use LY or Arkia.

According to the above-mentioned Haaretz article (here's the link again : http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=158987&contrassID=2&subContrassID=1&sbSubContrassID=0&listSrc=Y), the Arkia price was identical to that for a flight on an Israel Air Force aircraft.

It was a 757-300.

Arkia wanted 180,000$ for the flight (Using a 757)
El Al wanted 360,000$ for the flight (Using a 744)

LY blue it, but it wont happen again.

Hi Mike...why has El-Al offered a 744?! They feared they needed four engines to lift up Arik...?

They thought a 757 is out of question... LOL David...

LY doesnt have what to do with the 744s... 1-2 of the 4 are not flying on a regular day.. Very sad! They simply out of work..

Anyway, they didnt mind to sent a 744, they just needed the $$$..

I'll try to see it on the TV...

Perhaps Arkia/the media announced a 753, but finally a 752 was sent...

The question is not of the greatest importance...but nevertheless... Big grin

Sharon On Arkia 767?!

Tue May 07, 2002 12:10 am

Hi,

The newspaper here said that Sharon will be flying an Arkia 767. Since when does Arkia fly that kind of aircraft?
Does anybody have a photo?

Thank
Sam.

Perhaps Arkia announced a 753 and finally took a 752, or perhaps it was just an error in the news (Haaretz spoke of a 767...) ;

the question is not of the highest importance, but nevertheless... Big grin

Arkia doesnt operate any LY ex-a/c so it doesnt really matter... There is no IZ jet with LY c/s old or new...

The a/c was an Arkia 757. Not 767, its a mistake.

OK, I'm taking back everything I said. I saw his arrival in the US on TV, and the plane had Arkia new colors...
It wasn't possible to tell if it was a 753 or 752, but since everyone says it's a 753, it probably is so.
Sorry for the confusion...

"IAF 707s which are permanently standing in the rain, sun and dust of BGN's runways"

When they are not refueling IAF fighters, spying on Israel's neighbours, participating in ECM exercises and transporting cargo, that is.  Big grin

As for the 707 VIP incident, isn't that the reason the IAF got the "new" one (tail # 272, I believe)?

I was speaking of course of the Very Important Personalities 707s... I hope they don't use a tanker for that purpose...and I haven't seen the PHALCON doing the job...

For the "new" I have really no idea, I don't know any of their registration numbers ; all I know is that an LY/IZ 757, 767 or 744 is muuuch better than any 707...as "new" as they may be...!

Perhaps one of LY's last 742s is now sufficiently "new", reliable and comfortable...to become the next IAF VIP plane...?

The IAF doesn't have any Phalcons. As for the tankers, you might as well use those, the pax won't notice, as the equipment is stored in the cargo compartments.  Smile

The plane stopped for fuel in Shannon, Ireland. Not a political worry to be seen anywhere, huh? Its grand being "neutral"......

No, the KC-135, and KC-10 for that matter are the same way. In fact, the 707-300 can probably carry more fuel than the original KC-135's due to it's greater size.

I always thought these tankers were full of fuel, and that it was the reason why they had no windows.

Do you know how many liter they can carry? Or how many fighters they are able to "feed" in one mission?

The reason for the lack of windows on KC-135's and KC-10's is to help preserve the airframe over a longer period of time, and it's probably cheaper that way.  Smile I believe a KC-135R/RT can carry 96000 liters of fuel in total (some of it is used to feed the tanker's own engines of course). In comparison, an F-15E(I/S/K) can carry up to about 20000 liters of fuel (internal, conformal tanks, 3 external tanks), an F-16 (full internal plus 3 external tanks) can carry around 11000 liters of fuel.

Interesting, thank you.

From the 96000 liters...quite an important part will be eaten by the not-too-economic 707...
