What Does It Take To Restore An Aircraft?

Hey all - I've got a bug in my brain and want to bounce this off the Forum. I am curious what it takes to restore an aircraft to flying condition. And I am not speaking of just a small, simple little biplane (though they probably take quite a bit to get back in the air, anyway). I have in mind a jetliner like a 707 or a CV880 and CV990. Any thoughts, ideas, orgs that do this? Also, any Save-A-Connie members' input would be great to have, as I know they ongoingly maintain their TWA Connie in airworthy condition and are still putting much into it. Thanks! IL96

Well for one thing it will take a lot of money. It depends on what condition the jet is in to start. In one piece or fuselage and/or wings in sections? Stripped of all interior structures? Engines to be re-built or are they missing? And for the older jets where factory parts aren't available and have to be fabricated specially for your job, the cost will be even higher.

I am referring specifically to the Convair CV880s and CV990s in storage at Mojave. The planes are all basically intact, and it seems they'd require a complete stripping, all wiring replaced, all seals and gaskets redone, engines overhauled, etc. I'm not talking about putting together an airplane that is already in pieces...although Boeing has done that with a Model 80. And SAC's Connie was in pretty sorry shape when they got hold of it. Also a great idea, I think, would be to get hold of a passenger 707 that is still in service and re-fit it to reflect the 707 Astrojet livery of AA when they first started transcontinental service.

just read your posting.
Honestly, i also had this dream for a second, but when thinking of all the costs, it was immediately clear that such a venture needs a millionaire....

Check out www.airplanehome.com ; this site describes a guy who bought an old Olympic 727 without engines and avionics to be converted into a home.... I think he paid about 100.000 USD for the plane alone... now add the cost for engines, avionics, certification etc., and you won't end up below 250.000 USD - if you're lucky...

OK, somebody is nice to you and gives you the plane , say a 707, for free... to keep it airworthy, you'd need permanent, expensive maintenance by certified mechanics; to fly it will be even more expensive. I guess the actual direct operating costs per flying hour of an old, thirstly Convair or 707 will be about 5000USD (optimistically) plus extra maintenance plus plus plus.....

So - as sad as it is - I think this will stay a dream....

Well...I would love to fly 707 again......maybe the Republicans or Uncle Sam would give us a tax break to restore it and use it for charity (fund raising -- to
raise money for local group -- the old National Airlines in Miami did that back in the 70's and I flew on this charity flight few times).

Well, everything starts with a dream, doesn't it? :-)

Now I wonder, is there anyone zany enough to join me in such an undertaking? If SAC can restore a Super Constellation, why can't a similar group get an 880 and 990 back in the air? I am going to poke around and see what it would take.

Any further input would be greatly appreciated!
