Sad To See Boston's Eastern Terminal (A) Die....

Mon May 06, 2002 2:47 pm

The Eastern Terminal.... In its day, an architectural masterpiece....

You didn't have to deal with congestion at the other terminals. You could park right there. Twelve jet gates, never a long walk. A true showpiece at the airport. I loved comming out of the airport tunnel to see the Eastern Terminal.

I, for one, am sad to see it go.

Is it me or does BOS's Terminal A look to be desinged by the same people who designed EWR's Terminals.

It's also ironic that DL should be the one tearing down Eastern's old Terminal.

I agree its sad, I used that terminal often to take the AirShuttle to LGA in the early 1980s, when A300B2s operated the shuttle route from BOS.

Too bad that they cannot retain atleast the "Land-side" structure and build a more modern and effecient gate complex. Anyway, Eastern's terminal at JFK is also now gone.

No doubt. A beautiful and classic terminal.

Hate to see history be destroyed without a second thought.

Yes, it is sad to see Terminal A go. The airlines that used Terminal A are now all messed up. They should have renovated Terminal D first, so they could stick CO or DL Shuttle in there, than they should have worked on Terminal A. Massport can't seem to do anything right these days.

We was there at BOS airport and did went to the terminal A to look it around at the airplanes with an CO/DL and etc. I did look it around there as for first time at the terminal A. That was there early January 2002. When I was stay in Manchester, NH. Which one weather is beautiful day as for BOS airport. My brother and I did went over to terminal A from parking garage by near Terminal E. I did look it around and it was very intested thing as for old terminal. Well, that it as for now.

I am not that sad to see it go, as it was (to me) always poorly lit and not that welcoming. In terms of Massport, first, any usable gates in Terminals B and C were used. These include the MetroJet gates (Delta Shuttle) and the TWA gate (Midwest Express). Now, when it comes to Terminal D, I don't see why either CO and Cape Air didn't go there (Frontier is using one of US Airways' gates, they only have one daily flight, so it isn't a huge deal). Now, the Delta pier is very overcrowded, as Cape Air and Continental have both moved in there. Continental took over C-25, which was unused (owned by Delta but not used by them), as well as three other gates, one being the commuter gate and another being C-30, which they share with Cape Air.

Ok, when it comes to terminal shifts, here is my solution:

Have CO/NW/HP/VS all share space/club in E/D Terminals.

Move DL shuttle to old TW gates

YX/Frontier/Airtran to C gates on "left" T.

DeltAirlines: The reason nobody wants Terminal D is because it resembles a terminal at a third world airport!

It is very sad to see terminal A go. It was a beautiful terminal, but not very well built. The thing was made of some concrete rock mix that is literally falling apart. Oh well, make way for improvement!

Actually, they should have moved CO or YX into the US Airways pier of Terminal B, considering that US will be down to about 30 daily mainline departures (to PHL, PIT, and CLT) once they discontinue BWI flights next month. The Shuttle flights leave from the new 7-gate expansion now.

I'm very sad to see the old Terminal A close - it really is losing a piece of history, since it was the Eastern terminal at Logan. I've taken a lot of flights on CO out of Terminal A.

I flew into and out of it last monday on Continental from/to Newark. I have used Terminal A many, many times over the years, first on the Eastern Air Shuttle, from LGA to BOS and back on the A300 and 727-200, then on the Delta Shuttle, and in the past few years, I have flown Continental to Boston from Newark. I never thought the terminal was bad. It was not functional and an oddball among the other Boston terminals and perhaps a tad dated, but Delta and Continental kept their gate areas clean and pleasant and spacious. There were decent concession stands and an ATM, and it was easy in and easy out. Last Monday, most of the concession stands were closed or stripped away, only the CO check in positions remained open. Delta Shuttle had moved, as had Frontier and Midwest Express. Cape Air had some planes parked near the gates. The CO President's Club was nice and spacious in Terminal A. I wonder whether Terminals B-C-D and E are not congested with all the airlines serving Boston now using them. I'll miss Terminal A. It was nice.

Another piece of Eastern history gone. When is the last day of operation. And why did DL Shuttle move from Term. B a few years ago. Also, wasn't Term A supposed to be demolished like 5 years ago? Oh, and finally, why did they stop the parking in Term A years ago? I can't imagine because of security, since they were still doing it for Term. B.

I'm certainly not sad to see terminal A go. I thought it stuck out and really didn't fit in at BOS anymore. (I know, nothing really fits in, but A really stuck out.)

The difference in parking at A and B was that the parking at A was under the terminal iirc. A bomb in a car could take out the terminal, and probably some planes too. The parking at B was central to the two halves of B with no ticketing or gate space above it. A bomb in B would take out all the cars parked there, but probably do nothing to the terminal itself.

The only thing which seems to fit in at BOS is Terminal D -- because it's an old, outdated pit like most of the rest of the airport and the Airport station on the MBTA Blue Line. IMHO the inter-terminal bus system is an embarassment compared to what almost every other large airport (aside from LAX and JFK) has.

I recall that on the rooftop parking deck, the extreme corners were blocked off a long time ago. The cantilevers were deemed too extreme for the deteriorating condition of the concrete.

Yes, I have heard that Terminal D is very bad, I have never ventured there. Most of my ventures are in Terminals B, C, and E, but I have never passed through (even changing Terminals) through it. I would have thought that the other pier in terminal C (the United pier) would have picked up more of the slack (UA only has 45 daily flights, which means around 7 gates needed, and Delta took over two gates.). I would have thought that the two new Delta gates there, plus maybe one or two more from United would go to Continental, and Delta would allow Cape Air to operate its Cessnas from its pier. Oh well, BOS is overcrowded anyway.
