From OAG:
-Flight MS 0843 -Egyptair
-Aircraft 735
-Depart Cairo, Cairo Dep. Time 01:30pm May 07
-Arrive Tunis, Tunis Arr. Time 03:00pm May 07
-Travel Time 3 hours 30 mins
-Total Stops None

So it's probably a 735

From the BBC:

An EgyptAir plane has crashed near Tunis, the Tunisian news agency (TAP) reports.
The report did not say what type of plane had crashed, or how many people were on board.

The plane was on a short flight from the Egyptian capital Cairo to Tunis, a Tunisian Government official told the French news agency AFP.

The plane crashed as it was coming in to land, about six kilometres (four miles) from the Tunis-Carthage airport, TAP reported.

The control tower lost contact with the plane a few seconds earlier, just after a distress call from the pilot, the report said.

The weather was foggy and rainy at the time.

Eyewitnesses told Reuters that the plane hit a hillside and ambulances were rushing to the scene.

CNN has just said it was a B737-500. It crashed 4 miles from Tunis airport shortly after take-off. Weather conditions rather poor.

Well if it's a 735 then this updated report from one of the eyewitnesses is wrong:

""The plane is a big passenger plane. It crashed in the Nahli area of Tunis," one eyewitness said."

GREAT REPORT !!
==============

When did Airbus buy Boeing ?

An Egyptian airliner with 60 people on board has crashed near the Tunisian capital of Tunis.

The Airbus 737-500 went down shortly after takeoff, officials at the Tunis-Carthage Airport said.

The aircraft crashed in Nahli, in the northern part of the capital, about six kilometres (four miles) from the Tunis-Carthage airport.

Fifty-five passengers and five crew were on board the aircraft when it went down. Some on board are reported the be alive and have been taken to hospital.

The control tower had lost contact with the plane a few seconds earlier, just after the pilot sent out a distress call, The Associated Press reported.

Weather was foggy and rainy at the time of the crash, with sandy, high-wind conditions.

It could have seemed big to the eyewitness, particularly if he wasn't familiar with airliners.

Lester Holt from MSNBC certainly does know his aircraft. Not only did they show a correct picture of a 735 but he even referred to it as an NG model.

Airbus Or Boeing And The Media

Wed May 08, 2002 1:07 am

i think that some follow the strategy: "as long as youre not sure name both so you wont be completely wrong".

we should not care, however, but think of those who died.

We are not being morons, if the media are unsure, then they should hold things they are unsure about out until they are sure, although it happens all the time. We just find humerous the fact they stated Airbus 737-500, not the fact a plane has crashed.

I am sympathetic about the situation, exprerssed in my last post.

R.I.P to those who lost their lives and I hope those affected will pull through ok...

Hope more infomation is released soon.

Guys, here's a clue.. NOBODY cares what &*^%&^ model of &*(^&* airplane it was.

If someone knows someone on the flight, you think they're gonna care about whether it was an Airbus or a Boeing???

And the first thing a passive NON AIRLINER OBSSESSED observer is going to wonder about is the casualty count and what caused it.

You snivel about incorrect news reports, then go right back to the websites to find out the latest.

Don't act like such textbook friggin' nerds.

Psh-

Technically, the -500 is part of the "737 Classic" family. The Next-Generation series begins with the -600, going through the -700/-800/-900 series planes.

But let's not split hairs. May God bless the souls who were lost today and give comfort to their families.

For all you pathetic media bashers who want everyone in the world to be an airplane expert...

At least 27 people were also injured after the pilot of the Boeing 737-500 attempted to make an emergency landing near the Tunis-Carthage airport.

Calling it an Airbus 737-500 is a pretty bad mistake though. Most 'aviation experts' in the media don't seem to know a thing.

Update From Tunis

Wed May 08, 2002 2:23 am

The plane is reported to have problems with the landing gear... It attempted to land once and then it made a circle another time... Apparently , the pilot made an emergency call and then chose to land on a deserted area avoiding my village... He's alive I think and not seriously injured... They talk about 5 to 18 dead... The weather is continuing to be dreadful... I climed a hill with many peapole to see the aircraft and I think that it split into three pices... one big piece (front of the aircrat) and two others... no fire as well...

@Air Malta: Could you give me further details where the plane crashed, as far as I know they were talking about a hill. Is it the region around La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said which would mean the aircraft was approaching from the east. Or was it north of the airport?
