Derived from the French "M'aider" ("help me")

Racko, I too orignally had a "z" ending but the Collins Dictionary uses the "r" ending. Which dictionary did you look at?

Hi all,

the reason why the verb "aider" has an "r" at the end is because May Day actually comes from "Venez m'aider" which means "Come help me".
In other words, the verb is actually in the infinitive form rather than the "imperative" form.

Hope this helps,

I thought it came from the imperative, sorry. Thanks for making that clear, Andreas

m'aidez is the imperative 2nd person plural.

Actually you don't really have to care if it comes from "m'aidez" or "m'aider", because both have the same pronunciation in French.

Air Taiwan: "Venez m'aider" is pronounced vuh-NAY MAY DAY

...one of the few things I remember from French I class, is you usually don't pronounce the " C, R, F, or L,..:" at the end of most French words...but then again,,,what I know..?  Big grin

au revoir,
