LH @ CLT, Possible?

Thu May 09, 2002 10:53 am

As a new resident to Charlotte, I noticed there are a lot of German businesses located here. Seimens, Continental Tire, numerous others. After the new Intl. terminal opens, would it be possible to see LH come to CLT next year or so? Maybe not on a daily basis. Does anyone know how US's loads/profits are on CLT-FRA? Also, maybe it wouldn't hurt that BMW's huge production plant is only 1 1/2 hours away in South Carolina. I've heard that alliances play a huge part attracting carriers to cities, but with a great business market, any thoughts? Just curious, but what aircraft would they use if the did fly here?

i dont see LH coming to clt anytime soon, maybe in the distant future, and when they did they would probably fly the 342. Maybe the could start something BA does where they fly from bwi-clt. LH could fly from jfk-clt or something. I think at the time being the only usairways hub with potential for more international service is phl, especially with 18 intl gates as of fall '02. not saying that clt will never get intl service just dont think it will be soon.

BMW is based in Stuttgart, Germany, not Frankfurt. BMW execs love Delta's daily ATL-STG flight and then connecting to Greenville. In fact, it is BMW that keeps that daily flight profitable and running. Lufthansa used to serve Charlotte. They pulled out in the early 1990s. It was routed FRA-CLT-DFW. Considering that USAirways pulled CLT-FRA after 9.11 (though it was reinstated last week), and that BA does not even fill up CLT-LON non-stop, I truly doubt LH is in CLT's immediate future. Maybe 5-7 years from now that situation will change. I think LH's next US destination will be Seattle and more long-hauls from Munich (LAX/MIA).

However, if they did fly to CLT today, they would most definitley use the A340-200, which is thier smallest trans-Atlantic plane and is also used to Atlanta and I think Phoenix.

If they would come, they would most definitely use their A340 which is pretty much their standard for medium distance flights.

That BMW and Siemens (not Seimens!) are near Charlotte might help, but don't forget that Lufthansa like most of the european carriers get most of their revenue from ticket sales in the US, which doesn't make it very likely that they would start that service as the yields are down at the moment.
Another factor is that US destinations on the East Coast only seem to work with daily flights, because that's what fills Business and First.

I would think they would do well going to STG from CLT. I remember when Lufthansa served Charlotte. I used to have a picture of a LH 747 leaving terminal D. I wish more international carriers would use CLT. It has a very nice brand new expanded international terminal.

"BMW is based in Stuttgart, Germany, not Frankfurt. BMW execs love Delta's daily ATL-STG flight and then connecting to Greenville"

Correction:
BMW is not based in Frankfurt and not based in Stuttgart, they are based in Munich!
I think you are confusing BMW with their arch-rival Mercedes-Benz. Hence the next statement is also not true, I can't think of a reason why BMW executives love to take Delta from Stuttgart to Atlanta to head on to Alabama to visit their friends at BMW.

BMW executives love to take no airline at all but simply take their "M-powered" Gulfstream!

Setjet, yes your right, and too think, my wife works for BMW! Anyways, yes, DL's ATL-STG is kept alive by MB executives going to Vance, Alabama while ATL-MUC has a lot of high-yielding BMW execs going to Greensville.

If LH would introduce a flight from CLT, it would most likely be a 5 times a week (weekdays) A343 flight, and it would depart from FRA (I'm about 120% positive about this). Never forget, that on the european end alone, LH transatlantic flights have at least 50% transfer passengers, and STR (Stuttgart) is not REALLY a hub in european air traffic. However, considering that BMW and Siemens are close by, I would rather see US starting a CLT-MUC flight before LH starts FRA-CLT. Despite all predictions, US seems to be be quite happy with their PHL-MUC flight, otherwise it would not have been continued after 911, and recently they flight has been re-upgraded to daily service.

That may be true, but do you really think that this is enough to justify a daily (including Sa and Su) 763 flight, which (rumors) is going to be updated to 772 or even twice daily 763 service next year? There is way more traffic on those jets.

Not likely in my opinion. LH works very closely to UA, its Star partner, on the transatlantic routes, and CLT is certainly not an important city for UA.......I realize that LH did start a service to PHX, but that is a larger market with potential as a business and leisure market to balance out demand.

When LH adds new route to the US, I think that SEA will be a priority and possibly TPA or MCO (many Germans own vacation homes on the west coast of Florida, as well as a growing business center, and a jump of point for some cruises (TPA/Port Canaveral) and Florida vacation travel.) LH also want to build is MUN hub, so look for flights from MUN to current LH cities in the US.

LH is very close to purchasing the A332, which would be an ideal aircraft to open up some new routes when the time is right.

Well, I'd love to see a LH 342 here. Does LH fly any one-stop flights at all? Maybe ATL-CLT-FRA? What was UA going to do with the CLT hub, had the merger gone through? Does anyone see US getting into an alliance that would allow for another long-haul carrier into CLT? Thanks.

Another correction, Stuttgart is STR, not STG.

I think that it's unlikely you'll see another European carrier adding service to CLT unless US Airways manages to join one of the existing alliances (Wings, SkyTeam, OneWorld, Star). CLT is a very small market as far as transatlantic service goes; the connecting feed US Airways gets is what makes it work for them.

Sorry, I just can't resist, but Munich (or Muenchen) is MUC, not MUN. Also, not everything is Daimler Chrysler nowadays, the company "Mercedes-Benz" is still in Stuttgart and they produce Mercedes, not Daimlerchryslers!

Lufthansa is flying a lot of one-stop flights, but none to the US. They fly to Johannesburg and on to Cape Town with their 747-400, also to Buenos Aires and on to Santiago.

I seem to remember LH flying a FRA-DEN-PHX flight once, but I might be mistaken.

to name a few others there are...
There is FRA-EZE-SCL
FRA-JNB-CPT
FRA-CAI-Khartoum
FRA-CAI-Addis Abbaba
FRA-DXB-Abu Dhabi
