AirMalta - Alitalia - Azzurra Alliance?

Sat May 11, 2002 9:52 pm

This was the aim of a visit in Rome by (Maltese) economic services minister, Josef Bonnici. Minister Bonnici met with the Italian minister for transport and infrastructure, Pietro Lunardi to discuss what an official statement described as “closer cooperation” between the three airlines.

This could be interesting.

Azzurra Air had a franchising agreement with Alitalia Express. From the new summer timetable this contract became only a code-sharing agreement.
Now Azzurra flyes from MXP 3 ARJ-70/85 in code-sharing with AZ.
Untill one year ago Azzurra flew in franchising for AZ 4 ARJ-70 and 3 ARJ-85. But due to the reductions of frequencies and the introduction in AZ Express fleet of some new ERJ-145, Alitalia didn't need anymore so many ARJ franchising in its fleet.
Now that AZ seems it wants to order some 70/90 seats regional jet, the future of Azzurra is very dark.
The only positive news for Azzurra come from the charter market. This summer they will fly 5 B737/700 (one based in MAN, two in MXP, one in BGY and one between MXP/BLQ/VRN) and they have sold yet a large part of the available hours.

Instead of pouring money down the drain with Azurra, I think that Air Malta would be better off pulling the plug and concentrating on its own future plans. I think that it was a very bad decision from the very beginning when the Avros were purchased.

Can't wait for May 15th for the Air Malta fleet renewal announcement.

The 15th May deadline for an AirMalta fleet decision came and went. Still no news.
