AA To Fly To HKG Soon?

Sun May 12, 2002 10:48 pm

I read on the newspaper sometime ago that AA will start service to HKG very soon. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, from where? ORD?

When will it take place?

I think it will only happen if AA/CX is awarded anti-trust immunity. Last I heard here, it looks in favor of AA/CX, but I am not the one to ask.

Knowing AA though, they will probably let Cathay operate the new route as they need to expand the alliance out of LAX and into ORD or DFW where there are more AA flights and frequent fliers.

As for what destination, that is anybody's guess. Last I knew, United was flying a 744 between Chicago and Hong Kong so AA/CX might want to go to Chicago and compete with them, or they could go to an untapped market in DFW and take 100% of the pax there, and let United take 100% of the Chicago pax.

AA/CX would have to wait for the 777-200LR or 747-400ER/QXR to come out before they can serve DFW-HKG.

How about the A340s they have? Will that work? Maybe they can go DFW to HKG via LAX.

I don't think AA will fly to HKG anytime soon. Why bother when AA pax can use the OneWorld alliance codeshare with CX for flights to HKG from SFO and LAX?

AA flew a 777 on that route once to demonstrate that aircraft capabilities. It was obviously a non-revenue flight.

Since load factors for the ORD-HKG route are very high, I think AA should go into ORD and compete with United on this route. This might be AA's opportunity to ease the pain of travelers flying ORD-HKG, both pricewise and roomwise. AA can definitely take a good share of the market by doing this.

It was reported in the SCMP a few months ago that regardless of the success of the Hong Kong-US air services talks, AA is going to start ORD-HKG with the 777 next year. Hopefully they'll stick to their plans. If AA launches ORD-HKG then there is no need for Cathay to fly that route.

Trickijedi- I agree with you. I would love to see DFW-HKG with a Cathay jet, but I think AA/CX is better off going out of ORD as they will have a leg up on United as there will be connecting pax on both ends as Cathay's main hub is at Chek Lap Kok and American has a big hub at O' Hare, not to mention that Hong Kong and Chicago are not the smallest of cities.

If my wishes come true, I see Cathay 744s or A340s at DFW a little bit after ORD-HKG is started.

Blink182, Currently there are Cathay Pacific Cargo flights in and out of ORD to HKG via Anchorage. So it as it stands, CX may be better fit to run the ORD-HKG route and then have AA run the DFW-HKG route. An depending on the frequency of AA flights to HKG out of DFW, maybe AA can feed some of their passengers to ORD for CX to fly them to HKG. Because, as you said, AA has a big enough hub in ORD to be able to handle the traffic and the loads.

I guess we'll have to see what happens and see what AA does. Whether it be CX or AA serving ORD-HKG won't really matter to me. As long as United gets the competition for that route.

Trickijedi-
As far as scheduling goes, I am sure AA and CX will try to leave at different times of the day so they can give pax more of a choice for times.
