Hong Kong & Australia To Start Aviation Talks

Mon May 13, 2002 3:42 am

Hey all.

Just read an interesting article on the HK-iMail website regarding the new air services talks between Hong Kong & Australia, which is due to start on May 28. To summarize:

- The talks will be aimed at giving CX more access to Australia, including starting a new service to Canberra, and increasing the no. of flights on existing routes to SYD, MEL, PER, BNE, ADL & CNS.

- Allow Qantas to use HKG as a hub for flights to other Asian cities & Europe and obtain those coveted fifth freedom rights (similar to their hub in Singapore).

- Virgin Blue wants to start flights between Australia & HKG and link them with Virgin Atlantic's daily HKG-LHR service.

That's about it. The url link is below, and it's a good read. I hope a new deal is reached between the two sides. I agree that it would benefit the Australian carriers more than Cathay, but it would also further strengthen Hong Kong's status as a major Asian hub.

Who would this benefit more Hong Kong or Australia? Should the Australian government play hardball with CX and tell them to re-hire the 49ers that they fired last year, some of who were Australian?

I can't see how this will benefit the Australian carriers. CX has the right to fly pax beyond HKG to various points in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The Australian carriers do not have this right at the moment. Allowing them fifth freedom rights should put them on the same footing with CX.

Anyway, this is very interesting indeed as CX & QF aren't the best of friends. They don't even codeshare and seem to have no commercial agreements other then OneWorld. A very under-utilised relationship in my opinion.

OneWorld should realise that BA, QF & AA aren't the only airlines in that alliance.

The idea of CBR-HKG flights is a big surprise. I suppose CX could possibly operate 2 flights a week to MEL or ADL via CBR using A330s...

Canberra? geez. that came outta nowhere.

I sure would like to see the stunned faces of the passengers when they land in the middle of a paddock in rural ACT coming from HK.
Fighting for the glory of the Australian Republic.

QF and CX arent allowed to cooperate because they are the two dominant carriers flying HKG-AUST-HKG. Fels would have a heart attack

I can't see Cathay Pacific operating there own flights to Canberra. One would guess they would like to offer codeshare flights on Qantas services to this destination. I guess allowing the expansion of Oneworld between Qantas & Cathay Pacific would greatly benefit both airlines, as it has with British Airways and Cathay Pacific in UK/Europe.

Lets hope they can come to some agreement that sees Qantas being able to operate between Hong Kong & Europe, as this would be a fantastic advantage and alternative over the current operations via Singapore.

Good Luck Qantas & Cathay Pacific

Well CBR could be a chance, via another destination as previously mentioned. MEL, BNE, or ADL could work.

What other airports in Australia could offer chances or flights to International destinations? Newcastle , OOL Gold Coast, Broome , Townsville, Hobart, Avalon? Not many others I would say and CBR would have some business/Government travel, and it does have a catchment area of around 450,000 , including outer areas such as yass, Albury-Wadonga, Wagga, Queenbuyan, Golbourn. This area is very underserved, but it still wouldnt work IMO on its own.

I doubt there would be good loads for flights to cities like CBR, Townsville, and etc since most people in Hong Kong have never heard of these cities.
Gold Coast may be a good choice as there are many tourists from Hong Kong who would go to Gold Coast.

OMG, land in CBR. Great first impression of Australia. The first thing they might see is a cow or sheep running around before they see the terminal

The Airport Authority (AA) of Hong Kong is very strict when it comes to giving fifth freedom rights to foreign carriers operating at Chek Lap Kok. But since Cathay is getting increased access into Australia, that's a good enough reason for the AA to successfully negotiate those fifth freedom rights with Qantas. It would be great if Qantas were to use HKG as a second hub. That would also mean more Qantas flights for us Hong Kong spotters!!

Let's say Qantas does get those rights, which destinations do you see QF flying to from HKG? I would say LHR would be the first choice, what about MAN?
